Good eye, Ann! Yes, I was like, "Really? We're on a literal island and I'm seeing plants from Home Depot." Rolling my eyes. Be careful what you plant, kids! There were lots of Spanish Needles and I even saw some Wild Lime! So plenty of natives. But our boat captain did discuss invasives like the Australian Pine. Also, I didn't get a picture because it was fast, but I think I saw a small iguana! I described it to the captain and he agreed. It certainly wasn't one of our anoles! The captain gave a nice talk about exotic, invasive plants and animals and told us about how he took part in the python hunt in the Everglades this year. It's nice to meet other people that are out there trying to make a difference. Thumbs up

The iguanas are taking over south FL where we came from. We even saw one in Jonathan Dickinson State Park and let me tell you it wasn't small! Rolling my eyes. Rolling my eyes. Three feet if it was an inch.
In the neighborhood where we lived, we had a particularly cold winter one year & as I was out walking my dog spied a big 'un hanging from a scrub pine limb. I thought it was alive & then looked closer & apparently it had been killed by the freeze we'd had the night prior. That or it was just old & died or some animal wounded it & it died, maybe got hit by a car but I figure it was the cold since it was the day after a rare, rare, rear, hard freeze. My full birdbath was frozen solid & never did totally melt that day.

Iguanas -- that rang a bell. Once while visiting my Dad in Ft. Lauderdale, DH plus the kids disappeared. I asked where they were and they had gone down the street and came back with an iguana. We took him back to Illinois in an ice chest and the kids named him Igor. He lived with us for several years until he died. Years later I found out that Igor belonged to someone living down the street and he had gotten out of his cage. I felt guilty that we had captured someone's pet but our kids were always bringing something home with them. We had lots of strange pets, but my favorite was Ghandi, our Indian Hill mynah. We got him legitimately but they are now banned in the US. I taught him to speak.....he was better than a parrot.
