ADORBS! Lovey dubby
as they say
I'm always tempted to try crafts when I have nice cut tree branches. Mark just made a bunch of slices so DD can make some ornaments for her friends.
Plant it and they will come.

Several years ago I was looking through a high end catalog and saw some cute "trees" made from sea shells. I really wanted some like that, however, I almost fainted when I saw the price.
Every time we go to the beach, I spend my time picking up shells, so for a few pennies, I used a Styrofoam cone and made myself a "shell tree."

@rocklady - I like that idea...might even do that for my mom!!
“Little girl, why are you doing this? You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!” After a few moments thought, she bent down, picked up another starfish & hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Thank You! Chantell Every time I go to the beach I always say to myself, "I'm not going to pick up any shells this time," however, one always catches my eye and there I am looking for a baggie to hold my treasures. I also bead and I have used some of them in my projects, too.

Very talented--Jean! I have a small tote full of shells...just sitting around...

Now--here is something I did in 2007 using these gigantic pine cones...if you can find them.
These are about 10" tall. I suppose one could find just average large cones and do mini-trees?

Thumb of 2016-12-09/gitagal/deb69b

Stand them upright and decorate them as a mini X-Mas tree. Could use the smaller cones
as "place cards" for a dinner? A nice project for kids?

Showing a close-up of the base too--all decked out with gifts.

@gitagal That is such a terrific idea for a pine cone "tree"! Lovey dubby One year I had gathered some very large pine cones and pasted glitter on them with tiny beads also pasted on them. Sorry, I don't think I have any pictures.
@Chantell Again, sorry, I don't have an Etsy or web page. I just make these as gifts for relatives and friends. My daughter-in-law got me into beading four years ago. I've always enjoyed crafts so this was right up my alley. Since I was 79 at the time she got me into it, I laughingly told her perhaps I could become the Grandma Moses of beading Hilarious!

About 9 years ago I saw these glass block "presents" and I thought they would be fun to make. Buying one was too easy! While I was thinking about it, I realized I would need blocks that had a small hole drilled in it for the lights. I really didn't want to have DH buy a special drill so I located a company with the hole already drilled. The rest was easy! I put these under the Christmas tree.

My daughter (with the good design eye) likes these
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016L507X2/

They're kind of small for real plants though. How hard would it be to make something like this, and use plastic nursery pots in the sizes I have, so they'd actually be usable? I really like having my plants in thin plastic pots, when I can set those in cache pots that fit nicely. as in exactly, with just enough rim showing so I can pull them out.
Plant it and they will come.

Perfect planter for those types of plants that don't want to be waterlogged...but succulents love them!!

I've found that light fixtures and chandeliers mostly seem made of a variety of standard parts. Today I got out my box of saved parts and made two more bird feeders. I'm waiting for dry weather so I can spray them all nice copper, then will show you.
Plant it and they will come.

Sally,

You comments on the concrete planters got me to thinking. (Look out!)

To make your own, you would need
- a box of some sort that was large enough for your pot to fit into, with probably a 1-inch space all the way around.
- Coat the inside of the box with Murphy's Oil Soap (http://community.ceramicartsda...).
- Also coat the outside of your pot if you want to remove it.
- A piece of plastic/copper pipe or old garden hose to lay across the top (actually the bottom) of your pot to create drainage holes.
This would need to run at least from the center of the pot to the side of your box mold. Don't forget to coat with the soap.

- Place the plastic pot upside down in your mold. Place it on a sturdy work surface
- Start filling the mold with cement mix until you're almost at the top of the inner pot.
- Position your drainage tube
- Fill the rest of the mold with cement mix

Place in a safe place to dry/harden.

Once it's dried, I would remove the mods and place the block out in the weather so that any lime in the cement mix will start to leach out and not kill the first thing you put into it.

Just a thought.

@rocklady, love the beaded necklace with the sand dollar.... wondering, do you coat sand dollars (or other fragile beach treasures) with anything or just let them take their chances? I'm pretty sure a sand dollar wouldn't last long around my neck, even if "hardened" the grade school way with white glue...

@critterologist I mixed 1 part Elmer's and one part water and gave both sides several coats. Then I gave it a coat of Martha Stewart pearl craft paint. I haven't had any problems and I have several necklaces which I have worn lots of times, and believe me, I'm a real klutz when it comes to breaking things.
