How cold does it get where you are, Pratik? How warm are the days, usually?

Often a 20cm. thick layer of leaves and/or cut grass (hay or straw work too) over the root area is enough to keep a papaya happy, but if there is a hard frost or a freeze the whole trunk sometimes will collapse. It's a watery stem, not strong and woody, so if all that water in the stem freezes the whole stem turns to mush. This does NOT necessarily kill the plant though.

Yes, they do stop or slow down a lot if you are getting cold nights. How cold does it normally get in winter there?

Be sure to slow down on watering while the tree is growing slowly, too. Probably doesn't need any fertilizer until the weather is warmer.

During winter minimum temperature is between 49 to 86. So should I water less & don't apply fertilizer ?

That's about the same as we get here, so I'd say yes, ease back on watering and don't fertilize until the night temperatures are warming up again.

Hard to say, but it may just be the cool weather. Either the pollinators aren't very active because of the cool weather, or the flowers just won't set fruit because of the cool nights. I'm sure there are pollinators where you are. The papaya in my garden self-pollinates somehow but I never see the pollinators on it either. I honestly can't recall if it sets fruit in the winter.

That being said, there's no harm in trying it so go ahead if you want to.

Evening is preferred here, so as not to affect bees and other beneficial insects.

What are you spraying for? Be sure it's something non-toxic so you can still eat the fruit!

Could the plant be getting too dry during the day, Pratik? Those stubs do look like the buds either fell or were broken off but I do see one bud that has turned brown as well. If you water deeply in the mornings, this might prevent bud drop.

Did you have an especially cold night recently? That could also cause the buds to drop.

Otherwise, perhaps a bird did it. But it doesn't look like insect activity to me.

Nights are now around 58 F temperature. And will get more cold in coming 2 months. I also ensure it doesn't get too dry. Well I will wait 2 months to get warm weather again

How deep is that pot it's in? Papayas make a long taproot that goes usually straight down if they are in the ground. It may be hitting bottom on the pot. If it is, that means it's probably not getting enough water. Just watering more won't help the problem long term, and you absolutely do not want to sit it in a saucer - they hate to have "wet feet".

Any way you can turn it on its side and look in the drain hole to see if the tap root is visible? If it is, I'd say you need to first put more soil into the bottom of the pot, then start hunting for a deeper pot. Looks like you could add 10cm. or a little more? Pull the plant out of the pot, add the soil in the bottom then put the plant back in.

Bottom line is, this is the reason you really shouldn't grow papayas in a pot, long term. They continue to just get taller and taller, and also to grow the tap root longer and longer - which it needs in order to stay standing up as it gets taller.

Best solution, do you know anyone with a garden where you could plant it in the ground? Offer to care for it and share the fruits.
