Even with many that are known for horns, spoons or flounces they say the earlier blooms are more likely to have them. I have not had any in my garden that start with horns and end with none though. Some, like Abby and Me will give me fancier flounces at the beginning and thinner ones at the end.

@Lestv since i didn't pay too much attention to my spaceagers in the past, Shrug! the first one i can recall ( in my garden) off the top of my head was 'blue fin'. i cannot recall it lacked the fin part. Hilarious!

what you are describing as earlier or later, does the happen on the same blossom? or is this happening to different blossoms on the same stalk? (pls explain. since i was such a dolt on the nuances of irises). mostly, i was into ikebana, and growing all things plants and flowers as color, form and textures for my arrangements.

i was into the 'end product' and not the process. D'Oh!

Lovey dubby i now have time to enjoy the process of fruition nodding .

The first blooms on a stalk are the fanciest. Later blooms on the stalk may be simpler in form. Smiling

The two spaceagers I had bloom for me this year, Alien Mist and Thornbird, put out blooms with various forms of horns or flounces on the same bloom - so always interesting to keep an eye on the spaceagers!

Yes it was a pleasant surprise! You buy irises sometimes based on a photo and they don't always live up to the beauty of the photo...but I was really impressed with this one. The flower had good substance and was nice and big (hence the name! Hilarious! ).

Here's an extreme example of how the early bloom is fancier.

First bloom on Reincarnation:

I'm disappointed the blue-line one won't be introduced. It was hard enough hearing that I'd have to wait until 2017... Now I'll have to wait for a better one? Crying Patience is soooo overrated...
Rick was really proud of the smoky reds they were breeding, so I'm going to guess it's the last one...
Although I like #2 as well... That blue streak was pretty fetching...

rob, i've heard of self-deprecating, but don't you think 'reincarnation' did it to the extreme? 😝 Hilarious!

Nice chimera Rob. That is overstating the extreme just a tad..... Rolling on the floor laughing

Lilli - there is a Ninja Turtles iris! Not a mutant, just a dwarf. Hilarious! Hilarious!

I love my little Ninja's.

But, like Niki, I have had several iris that produce chimera blooms at the either the end or the beginning, with the normal blooms in between. At the beginning - then they were probably affected by frost; at the end - maybe the heat?
