New York Roof Gardens

Gordon Hawkins' Brooklyn roof garden is well known in gardening website circles. He frequently posts photos of his exotic and eclectic collection of brugmansias, passifloras, clerodendrons, and more. The source of many brugmansia collections has been his generous free cuttings in late fall each year. Gordon also freely shares his clever directions for building planters and patio furniture from foam insulation boards.

dahtzu, I appreciate your kind comments. I wish everyone could see the roof garden in person. I had seen photos for a few years, but they don't compare to the real thing.

Well.Sandi... you're so full of complements... I must say the nose was interesting...and it looked very useful...... and the legs are nice.. avoiding alot of the feathering... and excessive body hair...and the feet are wide and bright...
Dahtzu... well you're welcome to come by and shake anytime.. it is more of an experience than a show..
like thay used to say... Ya had to be there...
Thanks Sharon for your help with it also... stand up and take a bow...
Thanks Chris.. I'm not down where anyone can see it... so I so enjoy positive feed back..
Tee... Thanks.. it is like an oasis... plantwise... and as an emotional relief for me also.. and an object of great pride
Carey... OH shucks.... what a complement... I'm glad I got to your DH.... but what guy wouldn't love a lawn of maybe 150 square feet... cutting and edgeing in under 5 minutes... bet that was what had his approval..
Becky... well thanks oh the snow didn't hit me too hard... the air temps were slightly over freezing... there was just alot of the snow... the plumerias were the most disturbed... but they seem fine today inside.... inflos still ready to go... sometime or other ... MMMM the ice cream has been a new devotion... I was just telling Sandi she missed the latest one .. a chocolate ice cream made with an 85 % cocoa chocolate.. Just before it set up in the freezer.. I added a pile of meringue to fluff it out some... then I made a batch of Martha Stewarts best fudge... and swirled lots of it into the ice cream as it was comming out of the freezer... Now I have a pound or so of the " left over " fudge to deal with.. not to mention the ice cream..
.. it's not a big problem... carrying the old air conditioner down four flights now will help keep the effects in line.. and help burn up some of the sugars... Like the old Egyptians... I'm looking for a way of preservation after death... by the time that happens I'll have turned myself in to marzipan through and through... that should keep me about a long time

Gordon, I hadn't even thought about that, especially since he hasn't had to do much of that here this year!!! I'll bet that was it though..well, that and your proximity to the Meadowlands.

Well... good Sharon... I do need help with the fudge..I bet it wasn't up to Marthas standards though.. she added milk to hers.. and all I had was heavy cream.. so in it went.. a little extra butter..OK..a little grainey... it's hard to disolve 3 cups of sugar in one cup of cream .. before the cream boils...the finished product was a little too soft... after two days... so I spread it to about a depth of 1/4 " and it's starting to crisp up some.. The soft texture made it just right for being froxen in the ice cream.. but it's fully delicious on it's own

Sure Vic... you and Hank are welcome also... .. when Sandi thought of the tour review... she expressed concern I'd be inundated with folks... but I told her not to worry... NYC is quite daunting a trip.. I've only had 5 or 6 folks visit in the last decade or so.... and I've made it out to see a dozen or so gardens in that time myself

NYC IS daunting and quite intimidating for us folks that live way out in the country in the middle of nowhere Blinking

With Becky living in Phoenix, she would probably just yawn and think oh, another big city Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Even if we never make there, we can always dream and look at the wonderful photos Hurray! Hurray! Thumbs up That said, Hank would be over the moon to cross the Brooklyn bridge. He's fascinated with the structure and building of bridges. He would also love to see all the bridges in Central Park.

Oldest dd lives not quite 2 hours from the big apple and when she goes in for the day, she drives so far, then takes a bus that delivers everyone to a subway which then goes on into NYC. She's quite seasoned doing this. Me - I'd be terrified and freaking out Whistling

Pod... OH.. Thanks... it is indeed a labor of love... it's not a plant the evergreens and leave them... Lots of mostly tropicals here... In the winter... I bring them down and overwinter alot inside with me... I've 3... 400 watt MH lights that run on motorized tracks... so they move back and forth over the plants... another 8 color corrected 150 watt spots... and lots of T-5 flourescent fixtures... along with space in front of 6 windows.. this all keeps the inside plants happy... I also construct a cool room on the roof in November... of 2 " thick foam... no structural framing... just foam .. this I have mostly dark with temperatures kept at 45* F they stay mostly pretty dormant... in the spring I cut a hole in the roof... and install a piece of plastic... the sunlight wakes them up.. and starts them getting used to the sun again...a month or so later I cut the roof away all together .. and they get used to the temperatures outside... while being somewhat heltered inside... then I take the building down all together .. and move the plants under a shade cloth.. to further aclimate them to the sun... I use the 2" foam of the building to make things.. planters.. furnature... ponds... and countless items... when I take it down..

No no no Becky Loves NYC! I've only been twice. It's amazing because we only have skyscraper downtown. I went to a restaurant there named La Filementa 9spelling?) that is on my top ten places to eat.

Vic, I was going to take a bike but I'll get a three seater for you and Hank! Rolling on the floor laughing

I posted your article to Facebook Sandi...I hope you get a lot of hits from it.

Thanks Sheila, the garden speaks for itself. And thanks to Becky too. Why didn't I think of that?

BTW, watch out for those pedi-cabs while you're in NYC with Becky, Vic. When we were there, our driver coming out of Central Park, turned around to talk to us in 5 pm traffic and hit the back of a car. Threw me out onto the street, holding my 5 yr old DGS, who was sitting on my lap. I was standing in the street with death grip on the child. Climbed back up and figuring DGS was going to be traumatized, I asked him if he was okay. He giggled and said, "Oh Bubbles, that was awesome!" One of the highlights of his trip. Why were we in a pedi-cab? It was on DD's bucket list before we left.
