Love that 3rd shot of the swallowtail on the gloriosa.

Oh how pretty! My favorite is the Swallowtail in the second photo ... the blue sky just makes the colors pop! And, I really love 3rd photo of the Admiral on the Asters! What great colors in your photo's J!!

How cool! You can clearly see that moth's proboscis in the next to last photo! Nice shot!

A Two-tailed Tiger Swallowtail was nectaring on an Autumn Sage. The flowers were very popular and everytime the butterfly flew off a little ways, a hummingbird zipped in for its turn!

I was watching one day before yesterday flitting all around here & next door. I thought about running & getting the camera but it seemed to be determined to flit quickly here & quickly there, never really lighting on anything, just pausing & hovering briefly. Good thing I decided the way I did b/c just about the time I would have been back with the camera it flew off.

Wow, love the colors of that swallowtail against that beautiful sage! Here are a few Flutterby's still active in my neck of the woods.

Lin, those pics are lovely! Look at the 3rd pic, however. It's a Viceroy! For comparison, this shows both Monarch and Viceroy. You're lucky to have those around! I haven't seen any in several years.

Linda: Wow, I sure missed that one ... thanks for the correct ID! I do see the Viceroy's around on occasion but I mistakenly put that photo in my Monarch folder ... I'm going to move it to the correct picture folder on my laptop right now. My Florida B'fly book says the Viceroy are occasional to common here. Their habitat is pond edges, wetlands, roadside ditches and moist areas that support willows. There are many Weeping Willows in the neighborhood along the waterways and those are one of the host plants for the Viceroy.

When I was a kid Lin, we saw Viceroy's all the time. They were quite common. And I'm sure we knew the difference between Viceroy's & Monarchs b/c my brother was VERY into butterflys at the time & ID'ing them. He made butterfly nets for all of us including mom & dad & believe it or not mom & dad got out there with us plenty catching butterflys in our nets whereupon we would ID them & release them. Everyone would gather round though to see each catch & Ooooo & Ahhhhh. My brother delighted in telling us all about each one & he would pick them up quite correctly & show us close up the wings, the body etc... & explain in detail how this one differed from that one.
Gee, that just brought back some very good memories of when times were good & all us kids were "innocent" & the realities of the world had not affected us yet.
