A Queen in my yard recently. I've only seen 2 Monarchs on my property so far this fall, but today when driving back from Castroville towards the Hill Country, I saw some flying by. It was windy and there were other kinds of butterflies flying by also.

LInda: That Queen sure is a beauty! I haven't seen any butterflies since the storm passed by us here on the east coast. I'm hoping all the b'fly's migrated farther SW.

Lin, I hope so too! Don't know how they could tell the butterflies to evactuate, but maybe they knew! Any damage there?

Linda, Hurricane Sandy didn't do much damage in our area. The storm was @ 250 miles off shore and we got high winds and waves that caused a lot of beach erosion and in one local neighborhood a huge oak tree fell onto a car and a boat, totaling both vehicles but that's all the damage I heard about. We had a lot of rain but luckily no flooding ... other than that we were very fortunate with this storm! I feel so sad for those up in the NE who suffered so much damage. I heard on the news this morning that there were 16 deaths associated with this storm and even though the storm has moved some distance inland, the winds are still strong and many areas are still getting hit hard! I've seen what a category 1 hurricane can do and I have a very healthy respect for even "minor" hurricanes. My prayers are with all affected by "Sandy".

Thanks J. I'm still seeing a lot of the Long-tailed Skippers around during the day, and in the evening the Sphinx Moths ... both of them seem to love the Pentas which are still in bloom, but butterflies seem to be getting scarce. We did have a couple of cold nights in the 40's but it's warming back up to upper 70's, low 80's during the day and staying in the mid to upper 50's at night so maybe all the butterflies just moved a bit south for awhile where it's a warmer.

I just took this picture a few minutes ago ... Long-tailed Skipper:

I've been seeing Monarchs on the wing every time I go anywhere outside my neighborhood lately. So why can't some stop by here? I have enough flowers for them! Grumbling BTW, I love the Long-tailed Skippers! Haven't seen any in a very long time. Today I was on a quest. I'd been very happy to spot a few Common Mestras (which I haven't seen for years) lately and was determined to get pictures, which can be very difficult when it's warm...they just fly around, seems like they stop for only a few seconds at a time, maybe. No luck until late in the afternoon.

This morning I spotted a single Monarch Butterfly flitting about the flower beds. I have lots of both red and white Pentas lanceolata but the flying critters seem to all prefer the red variety!
