It sure is lovely, and sure does look like a daffodil too. Bet it lasts longer and smells better than any daffodil, and blooms more than once a year once it gets going too.

So true but I sure miss the drifts of daffodils I had in a previous home.

I see several spikes on this noid Cattleya in the works! I always like this one with its nice stance, pretty lip and a delicate scent. Bought years ago as C. mossiae 'Campo Grande'. I was told it looks more like a labiata and it also blooms in the wrong season.

Alice, I was surprised when I looked at Brent and Becky's Bulbs a few weeks ago ( everything half off!) that using their search tool with my zone of 9 there were a handful of daffodils that allegedly would work here in Florida...not just paper whites either...I didn't buy any..but I did think about it!
Jim and I went to Apopka today and met up with some other members of our orchid club

Thumb of 2016-12-09/sugarcane/696c9b
besides getting Christmas gifts for everyone on my list (and then some!)
I bought this Pot. Coral Gold 'Pacific Rainbow' for myself.

This is a plant that I already have and love...but they are so variable I needed another one.

Paci fic Gold is stunning, al my favorite colors!

Yes, there are daffs that grow here but I had vast drifts of them when we lived on a river on the Eastern Shore and it is one would think the growing conditions would be similar but nothing is as humid, muggy and close as it is out here on the sea islands. The ones I have here are sort of puny by comparison. Further inland in SC is different, as long as they can take the heat they do fine.

Lindsey, that is a nice picture of you "happy Shoppers'"!
I recognize of course you and Jim, but I would love to put a name to the other lovely faces? Smiling
I have done the same on occasion - buying an Orchid I had already, but was too great to pass up. Thumbs up

Pretty much, Ken. We found NOID Catts in spike or bloom for $10 each. What great gifts they will make. I came home with seven of them. I also came away with a large Vanda with two spikes for $15. Lots of others too. I'll have details and pics tomorrow. Bottom line is that it was a wonderful, productive day.

Ursula, the other folks in our group photo are fellow Tampa Orchid Club members ..next to Jim is Nancy Losgar..an AOS judge, Cheryl Crilley our club secretary, and Laurie Niessen..who puts together the fabulous gift baskets, centerpieces and does the orchid show display installations ..
Ken, at Orchids in Bloom , Pam Waters ( the grower) had beautiful mini Phals most with 2 spikes for $5.00 . I will take and post some pictures tomorrow. In addition to all the gifts I purchased..I 'think' I got 1 NOID Catt. for myself that is a semi Alba along the lines of Melody Fair 'Carol' and a pretty white Brassavola all from First Orchids. Just the Coral Gold 'Pacific Rainbow' at Krull-Smith and from Orchids in Bloom I got a few of the mini Phals and a couple of mini Catts for me.

I'm so sad to have missed the Apopka trip. But we fly home from Cayman tomorrow so I guess I can't complain too much after a week's lovely beach vacation.

Usually I get all my little holiday gifts there, ack! Now, what the heck am I going to give my fellow volunteers at the school garden on Tuesday?? I might be making an emergency run to Tropiflora on Monday. Sighing! Such a trial . . . Big Grin

Alice, I had to dig deep into the photo files to pull up a couple of daffodil pictures from Brent and Becky's when I worked there

and from my garden

We lived right on the Chesapeake Bay and were often flooded with saltwater..The bulbs were
deep enough that it didn't really affect them..I did choose varieties that were better suited to
the short winters though.

It looks like I have a problem with my new computer. It keeps shutting down due to over heating. So, it is back to Best Buy. This after 31/2 days of downloading data. Bummer.

Ouch, that hurts Jim. I've been experimenting with a new camera and the monitor kept cutting off as I was trying to focus. A quick call to the help line worked. They had me take the battery out for 60 seconds and that did the trick. I have a case number if it happens again.

Lindsey, that is lovely and exactly what our Eastern Shore property looked like in spring. I have no idea of the varieties, they had been planted in the 50's by the original owner. My boys would go out in the morning and pick buckets worth of flowers to bring to their teachers in spring. Most of our land was sandy and high and the daffs never got salted. We also had drifts of those old timey orange day lilies along the river and they did get salted on the king tides but it didn't seem to bother them.

OH, I LOVE the daffodils with the purple hyacinths in front of them!!! Soooo pretty!

Sorry about your computer Jim, hope it's an easy fix! I was having a similar problem not long ago and my computer guy put a program on it called "Speed Fan" He told me to leave it alone---it's for him to use next time I have an issue (which is fine with me!)

I can't believe we missed the Apopka trip Elaine...I'm so sad.... Sad

Gosh no, Patty. I will be long gone by then. I still have all these plants here to get back to as well as Puff. I will ask my next door neighbor to check on Puff while we are gone but could not possibly expect anyone to deal with the plants now that they are spread into three greenhouses and the solarium. I will probably spend 3-4 days in Sarasota and then there is the travel time. Since the drive is around 750 miles each way, my wife will probably force me to stop and spend the night about 8 hrs. into the trip each way. She is very protective of me. Lovey dubby
