Anne, your comment about your cannas/gingers being knocked down by the cold reminded me of something. A friend in Columbia says to always cut them to the ground around Thanksgiving. They are far easier to cut and clean up before they get knocked down. Once they get hit by frost they are going to be slimy and it is difficult to get cutters through the fibrous mess. No significant cold down here yet but I'd better get out and whack back mine today.

Alice I try to do that before they get to the slimy/stinky stage but I definitely know what your talking about.

Last year it was such a warm winter, I had all the tall foliage plants cut down by Feb. Just in time for new foliage to start. Thumbs up

Does your Ice Cream Banana fruit each year too? I have one and also concerned about winterazation. It's the plants first year.
Lover of all plants but especially tropical ones whom have my heart! I talk to my plants and it works beautifully!

@Brioli My banana has only fruited one time in 20 yrs. Usually my winters cuts them back to mush, I either have new pups or the occasional tree grow out of the previous tree's corm.
