Easy to do with scraps, the rose is made from tiny balls of clay that have been smashed flat. They need to have rounded edges.

I think the photos will show you what you need to know.

Roll a little piece of clay into a ball, then flatten it. One little ball will make each petal. Once you roll the center, then you just keep adding one petal at a time around it.

Before firing it you should push a hole into the bottom so that you can add it onto a stem, maybe green wire. A little drop of E6000 will hold it in place. But since I haven't done this yet, it would have to be a pretty strong wire, I think, otherwise the weight of the rose will bend it over.

Tooth picks? Maybe a skewer? Something a little stronger than wire, but it would be added after firing.

You could also glue it to a picture frame or onto a little jewelry box without a stem.

Anyway, something fun to do with little scraps.

You can also make calla lilies the same way, just using the first step.

Sharon, that Rose is so pretty! I haven't played with clay since I was a kid ... and I love Roses so I might have to give this a try sometime! How about a green pipe cleaner for the stem?

Not sure the pipe cleaner would work, because polymer clay is heavy. Maybe if you made the rose smaller.

So get out and find yourself some polymer clay, Lin, you'll love it. There are lots of polymer clay experts here. I used to work with it a lot but haven't spent much time with it recently. This is easy though, and very fun to do.

Oh, that's true ... I wasn't thinking. I think I'd use wooden dowels, they come in all sizes/thicknesses. I really think I'd like to try it sometime ... but do you need a special oven to fire/bake the stuff?

No special oven. There are several polymer clay tutorials and lots of directions here on Garden Art. Charleen seems to do a lot of clay, so I'm sure she has really good specific answers.

I do use a baking sheet that I only use for this clay, and there will be directions on the clay package. I use Fimo clay and it fires at 265 for 20 - 30 minutes. Other brands might tell you something else. Some people use a toaster oven and only use it for the clay. Anyway, directions are on the clay packaging and also on many of these threads as well as all over the internet. Just google polymer clay.

You might be surprised, Sheila. This one little rose is one thing I taught first in my ceramic sculpting classes. It's really easy to make.

Love the rose! I haven't done any flowers yet, I'll have to give this a try.

Somebody just asked if I painted the clay, no, I used Fimo and it's already colored. BUT I don't have any green clay and so I smushed a little yellow with a little blue to make the green for the leaves. If I'd smushed longer it would have been a solid color, but I didn't so I ended up with two or three shades of green.

My smushing fingers got tired.

Beautiful, Sharon! I've done this with chocolate to make chocolate roses. Here's the dough recipe:

Melt 10 oz. chocolate chips in the microwave for one minute. Stir. If chocolate is not completely melted, give it another zap in the micro. Stir until smooth. Add 1/3 cup light corn syrup and stir to blend. Pour dough onto waxed paper. Using your fingers, spread the dough to 1/2 inch thickness. Cover loosely with another sheet of waxed paper. Let it sit for a couple of hours or overnight to stiffen.

Knead the dough as you go to keep it soft and pliable. You're now ready to make your roses, following Sharon's instructions above. When you flatten the balls, the thinner you can make the dough, the more delicate your rose will look.
