I have never "fed" Hummers--even if I have quite the collection of Hummingbird feeders.
The one year my B&B Salvia bloomed--I did see them. So cute!
I just do not have the plants that would attract them.

Attn crafty people: Does anyone have a plastic eyeball to spare? Our goose took a tumble and lost an eye. Maybe half an inch big. Snap shows his good side. The eyeball doesn't need to match perfectly, it's a garden folly.

I'll check for google eyes upstairs, but I think mine might be just the little ones, not big enough for your bird. Do you care if the eye "googles?" I think I have some white half-marbles, could add a pupil with extreme sharpie (black) -- even make you a matching pair...

I put out 2 hummer feeders last week. The first hummer showed up 2 days ago. I was thrilled to see it. I expect there will be about 4 here for the Summer.

They usually nest in the cedar tree in the far back yard. The leaves are tight and protective. Other birds don't try to go in there. That's the reason the cedar tree stays for as long as I live here.

The first hummers nested there when the cedar was only 4' tall. It is 15' now. It is THEIR tree as far as I am concerned.

How wonderful!! We see youngsters here most years, but I have no clue where they're nesting. For me, the "tree that stays" is the mimosa, not only because it's sentimental for Jim but also because when it's in bloom the hummers pretty much spend their day up in its canopy. For both those reasons, I'll put up with pulling seedlings from all over the garden.

I can't say I've ever seen baby hummingbirds in my yard, but I sure would like to!
I haven't put a hummingbird feeder up yet, but the Coral Honeysuckle blooms are close to opening up.

We have probably 4 nesting pairs every year, by the end of summer it looks like a swarm at the feeders, with all the young ones joining in. There are plenty of dense shrubs and trees here for them to be well protected and nest in. We also get our fair share of sphinx moths, they just love the butterfly bushes and annuals. Smiling

I got to help rescue a fledgling House Finch today. Some neighbors found it and called me to help. It had an infected eye, which may have caused its mom to kick it out of the nest early. Otherwise, it seemed fine and it was really cute!
I called the Wildlife Rescue League and was put in touch with a wonderful lady who knew how to care for it.

I'm going to clean out my feeders in the hope of keeping the other finches healthy.

Yesterday, Bonnie heard and saw this little bird fly into the kitchen window. It fell stunned to the ground, but was still alive. Since River was trying to get at it, Bonnie scooped it up and put it in one of my big empty plant pots. It wasn't very responsive and we were sure it would be a goner by morning. However, it was out of the plant pot and laying sideways on the deck, still hanging in there though. I put it back in the plant pot with a little tray of water and went about my morning. When I came back to check on it, it was out of the plant pot and again laying sideways on the deck. I have to give the little guy credit for perseverance. Since River kept trying to get at it and it wouldn't stay put, I put a trivet temporarily over the pot and then went to the pet store and got the smallest bird cage they carry. I added a bit of water, bird seed, and a little chunk of suet with birdseed in it. It is obviously injured somehow because when it falls over it can't get up. However, just a mere 24 hours after the injury it is perky, eating the suet, and drinking the water! It is perfectly content in my hands and isn't scared at all whenever I put it right side up again. I guess I will try to take care of it and see if the injury heals. At least it is eating and drinking, so we'll see how it goes. I think it is some kind of thrush?

Saw a hummer. Near the red honeysuckle. Hooray!! Then he flew up into a gum tree and sat on a branch for a bit. We were eating dinner and Jeff jumped up and said LOOK. I figured I would see one eventually on the honeysuckle.

Actually, it might be an ovenbird. I just saw a photo of one when I was googling thrushes and the ovenbird has the same kind of striped crown that this little guy has

Little birdie is resting comfortably in the bird cage sitting by my side. Made its way over to the pile of nesting type material I put in the corner and is actually upright instead of on its side. I was reading that oven birds forage in the leaves on the ground in deciduous forests - their diet is beetles, ants, flies, catepillars... It was eating the suet this evening, but if it takes a while for it to heal I guess I should find it some insects to eat. Not sure I can actually find any when I'm specifically looking for them, I wonder if pet stores sell that kind of thing?

most pet stores should sell crickets , wax worms and meal worms. our pet smart did at least when I had tree frogs as well as a local non chain pet store.

you can freeze crickets to kill them so they don't get away. I can't remember how long it takes but pretty sure it was stated on a bluebird site.

found it ... http://www.sialis.org/crickets...

What a sweet little bird! Maybe it has a slight concussion; Crossing Fingers! that it will hill.

It might eat earthworms, but if not mealworms would be a good and fairly easy choice. Keep them in the fridge, though, or they'll turn into beetles.

Aspen, how is your bird "patient" doing?

One of my Catbird companions is back! It follows me around the yard, hoping that I'll dig up some worms for it and "mewing" at me the whole time.

There's a new bird at my feeders! I'm pretty sure it's a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak. It's been sharing the safflower feeder (with a little sunflower seed) with the Cardinals and Doves. According to my bird books, it's probably just migrating through.

I saw a Bluebird today, too Smiling

I'm feeling quite sad that ovenbird didn't make it. I was only taking care of it for a little over 48 hours, but it was such a perky little thing and my heart went out to it. I was hoping, but wasn't sure if it would ever be able to take care of itself out in the wild, but I thought it had made it past the dying crisis and might just have to live in captivity with me taking care of it.
