Zero out of fifteen!! The stores carrying these would be better off just selling them as assorted daylilies. It would be more honest and cause a lot less disappointment (I think).

It does apply to other plants sold in the same manner. Iris, e.g., are notorious for being incorrectly labeled. The photo and/or name is not reliable. Experienced gardeners probably know this and take a chance anyway. It's the unsuspecting beginners that are the unfortunate victims. I suspect they are often disappointed.

Becky, I hope your luck is better than most. We'll see. I don't trust DL from box stores. I was in Cosco yesterday and saw lots of lovely looking boxed/bagged plants and didn't want to chance them either.

Thanks for sharing your experience with bagged daylilies, everyone.

I have a scape developing on Frosted Vintage Ruffles, which will probably bloom in another couple of weeks. So we will see how true it is. And if it is not, I will write a complaint letter to the company that the daylilies came from.

Just out of curiosity, what is the country of origin of the bagged daylilies you get there in the States, or does it not say on the bag?

So maybe grown in the Netherlands, like this one ('Frosted Vintage Ruffles') from Van Zyverden - it doesn't say that on the package?

I read somewhere several years ago that most of the daylilies from the Netherlands are tissue cultured.

Yes, the bagged daylilies I purchased were from: http://www.vanzyverden.com/

So they raise or grow them from tissue cultures in the Netherlands and import them to MS?

It shall be interesting to see if any of the cultivars that I purchased are true to the name of the cultivar. I shall know soon about Frosted Vintage Ruffles.

I looked after reading this and yes, they are products of the Netherlands.

Worst case, I have two new Daylilies that'll go around the mail box or shared with others. Hope they are true to their name. Crossing Fingers!

Well, one of my 3 bloomed yesterday. And sad to say ..... it is FAR from true to name. I think we should ALL complain to the company every time one of ours blooms and it does not appear to be the cultivar that we bought.

Here is "Frosted Vintage Ruffles" ..... NOT!!!!

Entire plant:
Thumb of 2017-02-25/beckygardener/3a9809

The stats:
Thumb of 2017-02-25/beckygardener/c42cd9

Looking at the stats, it appears to be a "small" bloom cultivar or has miniature genes. The bloom was 3". Ironically, it is kinda cute. But certainly NOT what I was expecting. It also seems to possibly have increased since I planted it in the pot.

I am going to send an email to complain to the company about the fact that it is not what I thought I was purchasing.

I bought 2 other cultivars, so will see what they look like. Almost like a "potluck" bag of daylily roots when you buy them. No telling what you will get! Angry

I bought several bags of the bagged daylilies from Walmart when I was first starting out.

Won't be buying any more though.

A couple like Crimson Pirate appeared to be correct labeling and did okay. Other IDs were questionable and some plants were lost due to rot that had started in the bag.

I also had purchased some bagged amaryllis from Walmart too and only a couple of the bulbs were correctly labelled. Won't be buying any more of those either.

Here is the "Night Beacon" bagged daylily. It appears that it "might" perhaps be correct in the ID. First bloom is not very pretty, but it does have the correct coloring of the petals and eye/throat.

The bloom size is bigger at 5" instead of 4", but I have several daylilies here bloom bigger than registered, so that doesn't really mean anything. Potted daylilies always have shorter scapes for me. I have 2 other roots of this in the same pot. It will be interesting to see if the blooms match.

Looks good, Becky! And it will be interesting to see if the fans all match.

I bought several when I first got into daylilies, and not one was correct. A few years ago my Final Touch died. I spotted a bagged one at Walmart & gave in to temptation. Lo & hehold, it was correct. It didn't survive the following winter though. I bought another Final Touch for $1 at a local nursery at end of season last fall. It came through the winter just fine, hope I have better luck with this one.

Crimson Pirate was the only daylily that I purchased from Walmart. It was in the plastic bag and looked dried out. It turned out to be one of the most prolific daylilies in my garden. It increased rapidly and has a long bloom period. My taste has changed and I plan to move it to a lesser spot in the garden.

The 3 bags of daylilies that I purchased this year have grown quickly and are all blooming!

Here is another incorrect ID, that bloomed yesterday. Supposed to be Final Touch. Obviously not!

Well different fan from the same bag of daylilies seems to actually be Final Touch that bloomed today. This first bloom was also a pretty poly :

Becky that red one looks a lot like Crimson Pirate. Which is a popular bagged variety around here form the same garden in the Netherlands.
