It sounds like several of us got our gardening plans side-tracked this year. I hope you are recovering from your surgery quickly.
The bloom is still not open, but I'm confident now that my Iochroma is actually Tithonia diversifolia. I have seeds for it somewhere but have never planted it, so either it was a mistake in the packaging of the seeds and a stray made it's way into the pack, or I have managed to somehow transfer some seeds I didn't plant into the pot I sowed in. Either is within the realm of possibility. There were several seedlings and I culled all but this one. Because it was very robust, that may be the only plant that was T. diversifolia.
I'm going to see if I have any of those seeds left and try again in a few days and see what I get. I think they were much smaller than Tithonia seeds.
For now I have this ragged behemoth that makes it's 5 gallon pot look like a teacup. Poor plant. I'll have to give it extra water and a nice handful of rabbit poop.
