keithp2012 said:@janinilulu where did you find that beautiful dianthus? Can dianthus be rooted by cuttings, I found one with Variegated leaves

The seeds came from poisondartfrog as a prize in game and I don't know about all Dianthus, but some CAN definitely be propagated by cuttings.

A Lavatera or another Malvaceae family member would be my guess, but it's not from me.

I was thinking mallow but I didn't plant any seeds this year! Although, that doesn't really mean anything does it? Hilarious!

Wondering if it could be a dahlia. I've never grown them before but that's the only thing I planted that I'm not sure about (what it looks like). Of course it could be an unknown volunteer, it wouldn't be the first time that's happened. Guess I'll keep waiting to see.

Alana, now that you said Lavatera, I just remembered that I might have planted something labelled "Bee favorite Hollyhock that came across the Oregon Trail in 1865". NO, I'm not for sure that I did but it's in a pile with some other seeds I know I planted. Anyway, maybe that's it? Whistling

Maybe. Hilarious! Alcea rosea (Hollyhock) is said to have traveled the Sante Fe Trail, so...

How about Malva neglecta? It's pretty widespread in the U.S. and I've heard it's edible, but I've never tried it.

Thanks, Alana. I tip my hat to you.

No, it doesn't seem to be growing like Malva neglecta, I don't think.

I'll keep waiting impatiently for a flower.

Sorry that I have been absent from this discussion for so long but I wanted to give you all an update about our school garden. We are getting a little smarter about planting and reusing spaces with multiple plantings to get the most out of our small producing space Smiling we have brought our kiddos back twice a month through the summer for garden club to help care for the gardens and begin to reap the harvest. Our garden only gets about four hours of sun a day, so plants take longer to produce than most gardens. We have already shared over 7 lbs of produce with our local food pantries and are planning to show some of our produce at our small county fair Smiling thank you all so much for your generous swaps of seeds this past winter. You have helped grow the love of gardening in our kids. Thank you Smiling Group hug

I can tell you that it's definitely not a Dahlia. My first thought was Lavatera arborea, but I'm not sure.

@parkslp, the swap is earlier this year, as you will see when you go to sign up. I don't think I will have time this weekend, if not it may be next weekend, but I'll refine the rules and send reminders to former participants that it is coming up and post a game. We already have 44 people who have joined.

Well I can;t tell yet but it looks like I might finally find out what my mystery plant is. It's about to show it's blooms. Doesn't look like mallow or hollyhocks. After months of tending to and caring for this plant, it's probably going to turn out to be some kind of weed. Hilarious!

Hmm! I guess that could be it but I don't remember it being so rough to the touch, like this plant. This one is like sandpaper. Sure looks like a match. Will know for sure very soon.

Thank you, Alana. Thumbs up
