May add that to my need to try in the future list! Thumbs up

I second the vote for Goose Creek--it does have a wonderful taste. It wasn't as prolific for me the few years I grew it (but our weather can play such an important role), but the flavor was awesome.

I also really, really like Soldacki--it is a pink beefsteak-type that has done very well for me. It's a very meaty tomato, and for me has been a good producer. Will try to get a photo of my Soldacki plant this year to post.

I grew Soldacki this year but it was not a good producer for me. Flavor was okay though.

I have never heard of Soldacki. I am however, growing an heirloom names Hillbilly that is new to me. I have been getting fruit which is both pretty to look at with the yellow and orange streaks plus tastes quite good.

I finally picked my first Mortgage Lifter and my first Pruden's Purples yesterday! It will be a few days before I can eat them, but looking froward to it. Mortgage Lifter is new for me this year.

Most of my plants have much worse blighted leaves than I have had in a number of years. Bad enough that I am afraid that I won't get all of the tomatoes to ripen on some plants. I am blaming it on the incredibly rainy June that we had. I usually start pinching off all new growth in August, to send the energy to existing fruit, but this year I am only pinching off new bloom clusters, I think the plants need all of the new leaves they can get to make up for the ones that are dying off.

My plants look awful and I got hit by hornworms this week. Some of mine are almost naked now!

So far I have not had to deal with blight, but I take some precautions. First I solarize the area with black tarps before planting . I think the heat might help distroy some of the spors, not sure. Then I plant on either a tarp or plastic mulch. I try to keep the bottom leaves trimmed to keep it them from having any contact with the soil. And lastly, I always rotate crops. Of course I didn't have a veggie garden last year, so everything got a rest.
This picture was taken at the end of July, Now the plants have grown too tall, and the tops have fallen over some. But you get the idea. You can also see I haven't trimmed all of the plants lower leaves yet when this picture was taken.

Very nice and neat looking Tom!

Claudia, Hate those tomato hornworms. Nasty ugly things. So hard to believe the moths they turn into are so beautiful.

Geof, I have never tried Pruden's Purple although people do keep recommending it. Mortgage Lifter is a popular heirloom in the nurseries around here each spring.

I keep thinking I want to try some of the black tomatoes, but never get around to ordering any seeds. Maybe I'll try them next year. This is a big tomato year for me, as I like to can a lot of them every other year, and use the room for other things next year. Like Cabbage to make saurkraut, which I tend to make on alternate years.

I am growing a cherry tomato called Black Pearl this year, one of those black tomatoes. The taste is awesome and I intend to grow them again next year.

Another black I am growing is called Black And Brown Boar, an early tomato variety from Wild Boar Farms. Awesome complex taste on this one, so very yummy. I also tried Japanese Black Trifle but not getting much fruit from it.

This is my 3rd year for Pruden's Purple, so I must like it.

Tom - I should try the solorizing and putting down plastic. This year was such a cool summer, I am sure it would have boosted them. I don't really have the space to do much "rotating". The two tomatoes that I have growing on the arch (where I have never planted tomatoes before) have got some blighted leaves too, but its pretty recent compared to the rest of the plants and the look much healthier. I may take a hard look and see what I can do to move things around a bit. Most of my veg garden is in high raised beds. My tomatoes are tall enough without raising them an additional 18" off the ground.

Last year was by far the best tomato year I have ever had. The least blight, the most fruit…..it wasn't because I did much of anything different. Mother nature just calls the shots sometimes.

I have found that simply adding lots of compost on top and not even digging it in helps cut back on the deseases. But yes, it varies a lot from year to year.

I grow all of my tomatoes in Earthboxes, so I'm sure that has really helped prevent some diseases with all of the rainy weather we've had. My biggest problem has been getting things to ripen because of the cool temps, but we're scheduled to be in the 90s for the next several days Hurray!

Mine are starting to ripen now with the warmer weather. I'm also having some issues with bloom end rot on a few, I don't know why, as I use bone meal with them, and ususally don't have that problem. It's not just one cultivar, but all of them have had some. I haven't had enough to do any canning yet, just all I can eat, and some to give to friends.

Lasagna gardening in my raised beds seems to keep down the leaf diseases, also I rotate tomatoes amount the three beds so the bed has two years rest before it has. Tomatoes again, plus all he compost seems to help

Interesting, I think like the info said, the later tomatoes look fine. I think the issue has been with the early ones. I'll see what happens.

We are finally getting some seasonal temps about 90 for the next few days. I made my first attempt at canning today (just 3 pints), but it seems successful.

Here are some photos of my weekend tomato harvest, and a close-up of my Soldacki tomatoes. Sorry the photos are not clearer--still getting used to using my iphone for photos Confused
