What's Blooming in November: A Call for Photos from Warm Climate Gardeners

By LarryR
November 15, 2011

Here at Cottage-in-the-Meadow Gardens, our outdoor gardens are in their last-hurrah stage as frost creeps across the landscape. As you'll see, there are still a few hardy stragglers outdoors, but for the most part, our gardens have been put to bed for the coming winter. This time of year presents a perfect opportunity for gardeners in warmer climes to show us what's blooming in their gardens. Floridians, Californians, Aussies, Kiwis, gardeners anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere or the southern reaches of the Northern Hemisphere, show us your blossoms! I'll publish as many photos as time and space allow.

Thanks for the rose photo, Susan. The plant is an amaryllis. If I had to guess which variety or cultivar, I'd say 'Apple Blossom.' The color is a bit too orangey, but there is some variation in blossoms from bulbs of the same variety as well as among the blossoms from the same bulb. These days there are so many new varieties (even double-flowered ones) that it's becoming ever more difficult to be certain of the variety if you're looking at just one blossom.

Carol, do you happen to know what the name of your amaryllis above is?

Well Thank you very much! I didn't even realize the flower was a amaryllis, but that sure does help a lot now that you mention it. Hurray!

Got some succulents with their flower still in bloom for now..it will be totally wiped out pretty soon by this incoming cold system:

Sedum sieboldii

Crassula alpestris, foliage is not as colorful though compared when it is in bloom during summertime, but it is fun seeing those tiny little flowers on each pyramid-like leaf.

Thanks for the great photos of your succulents, terev. I think that succulents sometimes get short shrift in the world of gardening, yet they have a lot to offer if more of us would pay attention.

Thanks Larry! Just adding this last one, it is of the Haworthia limifolia. The bloom is a bit way up the spindly flower stalk, I guess it is trying to capture the best angle of sun and warmth in this Fall season:

Thanks, tarev, for the Haworthia photo. I have the same species sitting on a windowsill in the kitchen. Smiling

Marti, I've seen this beautiful plant a number of times while surfing the Internet. As I recall, it likes acidic soil and is drought-tolerant.
