TK: your first photo is a buttercup not a butternut. Impressive selection of winter squash that are looking good.

I agree -- it seems like the water wouldn't be able to drain through the pipe very well (unless we're talking a REALLY large pipe)

Exactly. The original author suggested using a 4" diameter PVC pipe.

But if it was large enough to hold much water and much compost, and had many 1/2" to 1" holes in the underground portion, and the very bottom was wide open, water would still seep through the compost, slowly making tea and then slowly leaching into the deep soil.

The idea was like a tall, skinny compost "heap" that you watered THROUGH.
And kept replenishing the compost as it dissolved and was taken away by worms.

A 1" pipe would be too small (insufficient volume).
3" would be plenty large, I think.
2" diameter PVC? Probably too small to be worth fooling around with.

But I haven't tried the pipe myself. I love my heap!

There is really hard to see black plastic netting on those iron trellis structures. So the cukes can climb.

Here are some pictures of my newly relocated "earthbox" veggie garden. Moved it from across the yard to get more sun, as the last location was getting too much shade from a large maple tree. Additional photos of my raised beds with garlic, leeks and onions; a planter with a tumbling tom tomato ; potatoes growing in smart pots, and one of my herb containers.

Week 10:
I've been working on pulling up the weeds around my asparagus. Probably next week too!
So, I'm getting about this many tomatoes each day;

Thumb of 2017-06-12/texaskitty111/d8ccb7

I've been dehydrating a lot of them.
And, my fall seedlings have emerged

I finally got a plot at a community garden near our apartment. I planted this mid April. Except for tomato plants, I sow direct seeds.

Yes they are beautiful. Are the colors different in taste? I put the seeds out for these carrots last fall. They took months to germinate, this is what i got, finally.

Rainbows have a very subtle difference. whites maybe a little sweeter and milder. Excellent carrot. Jullianna has very good flavor, but a very long DTM. Purple 68 is more of a novelty, strong flavored, not really very good fresh. I was just curious about an all purple carrot. All of these are long carrots which require deep soil. I spade the carrot row to 12 inches. When I had rocky or shallow soil, I grew short ones like Oxheart, Atlas etc.
