Hmmm....
What amount of compost are you adding to the sand?
Did you get winter rains?
I got decent carrots last winter, but it took multiple attempts.
People at the seed store don't give you enough seed, I had a carrot set plenty of seed last year, and those seed did well.
awful difficult to grow them, until I finally had some seed from my own garden.
Maybe let some go to seed?

I'll let the rest go to seed, but usually don't do that with disappointing varieties. Should have left the one good one in place. I added compost of goat manure, leaves, paper, worms. It was 1 year old.

Thank you all. Sandy, it's a full plot but, I don't know exactly what the square foot size on a full or half size in the community garden. I paid $105 full a year, and includes everything( compost, water, chips, tools).

Today's harvest
Thumb of 2017-06-19/CoraBarner/d8b689
Thumb of 2017-06-19/CoraBarner/a934a5

I bought a pack of Roma seeds @ Home Depot on April 21th. ($1.35) been picking beans for a week now.

I also would be able to pick couple of beefsteak but, squirrel won't leave the fruit alone, keep biting it.

Maybe the squirrels want water, put out a plant saucer of water for them and they might leave your tomatoes alone!!

Nice bean harvest!! Thumbs up

hmmm.
Or....
Try a blender with an egg, and a buncha pepper flakes, or red pepper, or whatever.... Add some water, blend it up good, coat maters with mixture... See if the squirrels give up eating the maters when they get a mouthfull of hot.
Not sure how much water you should add.... On the cooking shows, they apply egg mixture with a paintbrush.... I always just used a sprinkling can when working with plants... Maybe try both?

Squirrels dont want water. Squirrels are not hungry. Squirrels are just evil, and think they are funny driving us crazy. Why do you think they take a bite from each fruit or veggie?

I thought they were 'tomato testers' to make sure they are safe for us to eat. Shouldn't we be grateful?? Rolling on the floor laughing

Rolling on the floor laughing My tomatoes get left alone, but everything else in my garden gets "tasted" (translation = "eaten"). I keep planting extra hoping they will leave some of it alone, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Sighing!

I feed wildlife healthy foods appropriate to the species and NONE of them attack my garden. I also supply water in an aluminum pie pan. If God forbid a toddler came along, a piepan would tip over. This is my first time posting here. It looks like a nice forum.

Ha! I have sugar water feeders for the orioles and hummers, and two water features, but those mockingbirds insist on pecking at my tomatoes.

Welcome to NGA, @Saltflower ! Where are you located? (It would be helpful if you would add your location to your profile information - click on the link at the top right of the screen; then we won't be asking you that question over and over Smiling )

We have a lot of squirrels and birds as well, but they don't seem to bother the garden -- maybe the squirrels are all too fat from eating the birdseed to climb over the 2-1/2-foot garden fence Hilarious!

OK, I did, thanks. I'm in northern San Diego county. I'm just guessing that I'm zone 9B. Sorry about the mockingbirds. But on the other hand, a free concert every night! Hurray!

I'm going to try the water idea today. Maybe, they are looking for water and it may help. I was warned by the fellow gardeners their crops get eatin also specially the very bottom fruits.
Oh well, I keep hoping there will be tomatoes to pick for us. Is just me and hubby so I can diffinetly share.
