F. meleagris and uva vulpis do not (unless you make a big clump of them of course). The larger ones do - especially F. imperialis, but mine thrive in a mixed bed where they are replaced by perennials in late spring/early summer and they do not seem to mind - however, these are established plants and I would give newly planted bulbs more space - just in case!

F. meleagris (Snakeshead Frit) is totally hardy and fairly tolerant of winter wet. What kills most of them off in fact is summer dryness.
Once they start self seeding you can get some interesting variations. Here are some of mine.........

They should have emerged by now!

Have you been to Frit. Sunday at Ducklington? There's a whole field that is full of them in the spring.

Just realised that we're near neighbours! I'd not heard of Fritillary Sunday - looks as though I've just missed it, too, although I wasn't in the country on 23rd April. Thank you for the tip; I'll try to go next year. Smiling

Dave, I ordered 3 of each of these:
Casa Blanca (Already have a small clump and I am very impressed with them)
Friso
Spring Pink
and 5 Regale to top off the ones I already have.

Hehe! Most of my garden space has already been filled with irises, thanks to all the kind (and veeeeery efficient) enablers in the Irises Forum! Big Grin I see you are also hanging out there, so be warned! Hilarious!

I got a mixed bag of purple and white meleagris a few years back. Turned out to be 10 purples for every 1 white! So the following fall, I got an ekstra bag of white ones. But the purple ones do much better here. Shrug!

Lilli, Casa Blnca is a great lily. Friso is nice, not sure how hardy it is though. Have not seen it in person.

Friso or Silkroad as it also is called grows very well here. Smiling I believe it has good hardiness both in Sweden and Denmark. Like many American bred lilies it is usually slightly later to emerge than the Dutch bred ones, so therefore it is less susceptible to frost damage.

Pic from last year:

It's my tallest lily. Here blooming above the large Miscanthus grasses. It probably topped out last year at around 9 feet. It was growing too closely together so I have moved them further apart now. The huge inflorescence needs plenty of space. I'm thinking about planting crown imperials between them to get som height early in the season, but then I need a cultivar that doesn't increase too quickly as I won't be able to dig them easily. Perhaps Striped Beauty will work as it is a slow increaser.

I have always considered getting Friso/Silk Road/Northern Carillon. Never have though. I have heard stories of it getting really tall. I'd say 9 foot qualifies. Lol

I didn't know that lily had so many names Blinking anyway, the 'silk road' I have is plenty hardy here Thumbs up

Sad wish I could grow CB, or any of the orientals, here--but far too alkaline. Gave it a good try, several times Rolling my eyes.

Wait - I was thinking Silk Road is a Lilium - is it also a Frit? I'm getting confused (doesn't take much some days Whistling )
