The History of the Poinsettia

Few plants are as closely associated with any holiday the way the poinsettia is with Christmas. It's an intriguing plant with an interesting history.

What a beautiful site that would be seeing all those red leaves around the manger. I loved the story.

I saw a new hybrid poinsettia last week that looks just like a rose. Very unusual. So sorry I didn't get a photo of it. *Blush*

Now that I am back home, think I will go get a poinsettia for Christmas decoration. May even try keeping it alive for next year using your article for instructions on care and coloring up. Thumbs up

Look what I found at Walmart today. It's the rose shaped Poinsettia. This one doesn't look as rose like as the ones I saw in VA. last week.

And this speckled beauty I found in VA.

Even though red is my favorite color in Poinsettia, I thought this one was beautiful.

Poinsettias are very popular here in their native land, Mexico. I've driven along roads on the west coast of Mexico in winter and the poinsettias were tall enough to arch over the road covering it with a beautiful red light. They are called Noche Buena here, which means Christmas Eve. I need to get one from the many roadside stalls for my front hall, it does give such a festive look. I've heard the story of the children carrying them to the Christmas eve manger as well, it is a beautiful story.

Jonna, I have not seen them arching over the roads but I know it must be spectacular. They are beautiful in a pot at Christmas but awesome plants in the ground where they can reach their full potential like that. You are most fortunate with what grows in Mexico ... all the plant life ... the awesome cacti and succulents, of course.

Feliz Navidad! Green Grin!

I have several of the plants that I left out on the deck till it was getting pretty cool out and brought them in and left in the addition room that gets not much if any light at night and they have all set flowers. The larger one is in fiull bloom and the smaller ones are just starting to color...I didn't mess with the closet idea at all.....Really surprised me....

Thanks for posting, blue. I'm glad to hear your poinsettia is re-blooming. They are so lovely. The natural daylight and dark cycle works. If you have a room where you can achieve that without too much artificial light at night, that's ideal.

I know what you mean ... I'm surprised when things bloom sometimes. And delighted! Green Grin!
