I'm glad you included buds in your picture. I think the dark tips on the buds are neat! I don't think I've ever seen that before.

@ bxncbx Sticking tongue out There are a few daylilys that have dark buds or scapes. Two that come to mind are 'Sir Black Stem' and 'Adavier'

@LilySue I think I read somebody was hybridizing for dark colored scapes. I remember thinking that's strange but after seeing these I guess it is possible. I don't have a ton of daylilies but all mine are normal.

Yes, there are a couple of hybridizers whose breeding for them. Steve Williams is one. He's @ http://obannonspringsdaylilies... and then there is Bob Sobek. His daylilys can be found here http://www.harmonhillfarm.com/.... Bob introduced 'Backstroke' which is a small yellow with maroon backs on the petals and sepals. An interesting plant for sure.

I was actually thinking of Olallie daylilies https://www.daylilygarden.com/.... They have some seedlings with very dark scapes (they look almost black in the pictures). I haven't seen them in person though so I'm not sure if they are really that dark. It would make it much easier to find them in the Spring. Hilarious! But other than that I don't know why someone would want to breed dark scapes.
