If you have a problem with your plumeria - ask it here!!

Hi, Hetty. I now have some 8 plums and half are blooming. The tallest is about 7 feet tall and "y'd" at the top with three stems. The rest are in the vicinity of 4-5 feet. In the past I have taken them from the dirt by late Oct., cleaned the roots, put the roots carefully into a paper bag and just layed the entire stem system on a shelf in a semi-dark corner. So far-so good. I dare not plant them in the ground because our weather goes to both extremes. Is there a signal of some kind when I should leave them in their pots all year long. Of course, still bringing them inside for the winter. I always trust your advice.

Christi - you can do with them what is easiest during their dormant period. And I would go so far as to say that you could put them in the ground, then uproot them in the late fall. People in the Houston area do that. Check out ThePlumeriaSociety.org for suggestions.
I believe their season runs to Thanksgiving, then they plant them again in late March.

Hetty can I just leave them in the pot and just not water them or is it better to take them out of the pot and wrape them, put in a darkened room for the winter

You can either leave them in the pot or bareroot them, Doris.

i would just leave them in the pot if you have the space. i have found that you lose time when they are started bare root with most of the soil removed from the root zone. i just put mine in the house or under the patio. i think i am bring everything inside this year though. i have many of them that are poised to bloom and i don't want to risk any tips getting fried from the cold. i'd rather just move them in soon and not play the in-N-out game on very cold nights. i don't subject them to a dark room either.

I am in zone 8a. 2010 set records for the highest and the lowest temps. Last winter we had a miracle. Most snow ever, ever. We usually get a dusting ever 5 years or so. We had snow multiple times and 14 inches once that broke everything. This past summer we had over 30 days of 100+ and the rest were 98-99. Lost more to the heat than we did to the cold. It wasn't the temps so much as the suns rays were so intense, they scorched the leaves of just about everything. When it is too hot for okra, it is too hot!

I don't have all that much room. May leave some in the pots and put others on the shelf.

louc! you lost plumeria to the heat! what happened??? just curious because ppl grow them in the arizona desert in full sun and no humidity in 110+ degree weather for weeks on end. they are usually watered daily during the summer.

sorry, I misled you. I didn't loose any plumies. But lots of other plants that surprised me.

So Plumeria can take full day sun? My house is south facing getting all day full sun. Most plants take a beating unless they're are good for xeriscape.
