Here is a brand new forum, sitting empty and waiting patiently for gardeners to come and talk about herbs. Patti1957 is the moderator of this forum.

I stopped buying gardening books many years ago and find mountains of gardening information online.
If you like to read about herbs online you might enjoy some of the links I found in my research about half way down the page http://gardenersdetective.web....

This planting guide looks very helpful as well.

I volunteer in my community researching answers for gardening questions. I've spent so much time digging for answers I thought it would be such a waist not to somehow organize the information in hopes that it continues to help other gardeners. I'm no garden expert, that's how I became a gardeners detective. Big Grin

It's lovely to finally see a forum devoted to herbs! My plant "passions" change a bit now and then at different times, but herbs is one love that has never changed.

I've been growing them in containers for awhile (a lot of clay soil here). I took this shot of some of the pots about a month ago. They've grown considerably since then. I have a rain barrel that sits just to the right out of sight in this picture ... so handy for watering. Not to mention the benefits of rain water. Thumbs up

I agree about the flower ... and the color combo. Gorgeous!

Sharon, yes, definitely good enough to eat. Hilarious!

Horseradish in the yard (love these leaves)

Hi Sharon and Cinda.

Cinda, the Comfrey that you sent me is growing great and also the fern leaf Tansy. I have them in big pots for now because I am trying to figure out their permanent place. Thank you again!

I have Sweet Basil and Cinnamon Basil, not for culinary use, but because I like the way they look and smell, and for the butterflies. So, I let them flower away. Smiling Same with the Pineapple Sage, two Parsleys, three Chives, five kinds of Thyme, and three kinds of Lavender. Had a Dill, too, but accidentally destroyed it. Sticking tongue out Thinking of trying some Fennel next year.

What type of fennel? Bronze or Florence?
I will have plenty bronze seed to share. I grow the bronze for the butterflies.

Patti, Glad they are doing well, Pots are a good idea till you decide they need a special place with space.

I think horseradish is the herb of the year this year.My mother has a large patch and I keep meaning to dig some, but it too is one of those herbs that
''stay put '' and need space.

This is the first in about 15 years that I did not plant any culinary herbs in the garden(except parsley but that's for the butterfies). I won't make that mistake again. My favorite is basil. I saw a big pot of it in the grocery store today. Do you suppose it would grow in a bright kitchen? Never tried growing herbs in the house.

I live in the country (corn&beans) about an hour north of Indy. How long have you been in Texas?

Susan, I don't think it is too late to start some basil,I cut mine all down when it gets leggy or old and reseed. don't know if there would be enough light inside without some lights Confused

Cinda, we moved here when I was 14, waaaayyyyy back in 1971. Last time I visited South Bend was 1987. Have to say, even with the sometimes brutal summers, I will continue to choose here over cold country. Hilarious!

I have my second crop of basil going, so it isn't too late for me.

We use herbs both for culinary and medicinal uses.

I look forward to chatting with you all!

I didn't get my garden in this year (looooong story), but I have stuck my herbs here and there. In my decorative planters and the flower beds. I always try to have herbs somewhere, and that's the great thing about most of them (they are very pliable in their requirements).

Bronze fennel makes a great color and texture in any garden, herb or flower.

I used to make lots of herbal cosmetics. I love the fresh smells and textures.
I shall henceforth count you all as enablers of my collecting \"disease\".
