I just bought some seeds for Homeria collina, a bulb from South Africa I hope might tolerate my Seattle clay. I looked in the Plant Database, and there is not much info, so I thought I would update the entry. I have two books on South African bulbs by some folks I think are the experts: The Color Encyclopedia of Cape Bulbs by John Manning and Peter Goldblatt and Dee Snijman, and The Iris Family Natural History and Classification by Peter Goldblatt and John Manning.
It appears they include the genus Homeria in the genus Moraea, and they convinced me. I looked in the database and there is also an entry for Moraea collina, also with minimal info. Probably this is the same plant.
I thought I might try to figure out what classification this website uses, I think I saw a reference to it somewhere. I can't find it so I am not sure how to fix this entry. Could you make a "Sticky" at the top of this forum with how the taxonomy is chosen here and a link to whatever website you use for this? I tend to be a "Lumper" not a "Splitter" but I actually don't really care, happy to use whatever source is considered the standard here.

Hi, Mary. In most cases, the source we use is the Catalogue of Life. We have found that it is much more comprehensive than other taxonomic databases and is updated more frequently than others.

I am glad that you asked about Homeria because I see that our database entries for that genus are in dire need of updating. All of the species we list are synonyms now, so I guess I know what I'll be doing for the next hour or so. Smiling

Thanks Zuzu!
I have bookmarked Catalogue of Life. I think a "sticky" would be nice at the top of this forum.
Wow you sure are a Night Owl ;-)
