Garden Phlox

These summer blooms are a mainstay in the mid to late summer perennial gardens. They seem to take the worst of summer heat and dry spells without damage. And they add color when most needed. The nicest feature of this plant is the huge number of bees and butterflies it attracts!

Thank You! everyone.
The picture from which this banner was made seems to have disappeared on me. However I have some which I found today that are similar. For anyone who wants a powerful fragrance in the gardens, plant some phlox. These are the perennial kinds known as Phlox paniculata. If you want plenty of bees and butterflies these are the blooms to try. Here are some old photos that I found this morning. The first at left is a generic seedling which I left in the garden. The second is named "Prime Minister", and third at right is called "David" I presume after the Biblical David. And the last is of a generic seedling.

As most of you already know there are many, many cultivars including the "annual" ones known as Phlox drummondii.

I've been shopping online for phlox so your photos are magical to my eyes. I have lots of David and some others but want more for another garden. The inspiration came from these photos taken this summer:

Thanks, Lilli - they were taken at a local nursery where they have an "Idea Garden", totally entrancing and a great stroll on a hot day.

Arlene,
I wish I could be in a place like that just now: It's snowing "cats and dogs" here all day with drifting winds. These and pictures like them will sustain us through the long winter ahead. I look forward to the landscape photos and other wide shots of places like this. Thank you for sharing some beauty of this place. And I am especially drawn to the aquatic plants in the old bath tub. I will wait patiently for spring here, but I plan to enjoy another favorite season also--- Christmas! I wish everyone a very happy Christmas.

It's closed now and plants have been cut back so no new photos there until April.
