Jim's parents' neighbor across the court moved in just this spring, and she's a gardener. She's been renovating the garden in the center of the courtyard, same place where I planted the irises... removing overgrown grasses, limbing up the small trees, etc. In the process, she's found bunches of seedlings of the dogwood trees... different species than the Virginia state tree, very ornamental shape & bark, gets edible fruit... just a minute while I look it up.

Yes! Cornelian Cherry, Cornus mas Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas)

The flowers aren't much to write home about, but it's a pretty little tree. I'm going to dig a few seedlings for myself and can pot up a few more to many more if there's interest. I figure if I put multiple seedlings in a 2 gallon pot, they'll be easier to water this summer and be ready to up-pot individually this fall.

Tulip poplar is a cool tree but not for anyone with a small yard.
The Cornelian cherry plan sounds..' like a plan'!
Plant it and they will come.

Everybody welcome Annie to our group. Some of you have met her in the past as she is the owner of Grasshopper Perennials near Knoxville, MD. She was unaware we had fled (happily) to this site and we just re-connected, she thought we had just given up gardening.

A couple of weeks ago flood waters completely swept away her greenhouse and all the plants that were in it.

Annie, glad you found us! So so sorry to hear you got caught in one of those flash floods. Our car was totaled when the Y (and the side parking lot) flooded. Hard to believe we've had two of those "once in a thousand year" flooding events within the past 3 years. Crying It'll be a while until any of the Cornus mas seedlings are saleable size, but I'll see what I can dig/pull.

Frenchie, I should be able to slide you a multi container at the fall swap. It's fun to watch little trees grow up.

I'm still waiting for the variegated willow and lilac cuttings to do much of anything. Not sure any of the variegated weigela cuttings are even still green. Weird... usually by this time I'd have cuttings filling quart or even gallon pots with roots. New plumeria cuttings are just "sitting," too. How can it be too wet for cuttings??

It's a beautiful, sunny, warm, breezy day . . . somewhere. It certainly isn't here. Sighing! We're a grey, wet 60 degrees.

Everything here is stalled. My clematis and mandevilla are just sitting there. About the only thing that's really growing is the grass.

Welcome Annie! Looking forward to meeting you.
Jill, most of my plumies are leafing out. Been keeping them on covered porch. Did put one out in the garden, got waterlogged, sogged mess, had to toss. Temps should be warmer tomorrow.

My four sticks have leafed out and the pots are all ready. Just afraid to put them out in the rain. Can they handle the rain if they have roots?

As long as the plumies have good drainage, they'll be fine in the rain. If they don't have roots yet, keep them a bit shallow -- that way if the end gets squishy, you'll have a lot of length left once you cut off the squishy part.

My older plumies are fully leafed out, new ones look about like Lisa's pictures, but what concerns me is that the 2 unrooted cuttings (bought that way) are still not rooted -- maybe one or two tiny hairs that I'm not sure count. I have heard that red/pink plumerias can take longer to root, so as long as they don't go squishy I guess it's OK... but one is firm for the lowest 2", then soft (not rotted, more like dehydrated) for a few inches, then firm again. Nothing I can do except cross my fingers, I suppose.. although I'm thinking of pulling them back inside and putting them under lights, with bottom heat.

I did recently get advice on fertilizing from DutchLady... I added Osmocote time-release fertilizer when potting up some of them, sprinkled the same on the surface of ones that didn't get repotted this year... she said that's exactly what she uses and should be all the food they need for the season.

Im pretty much starting all over.
I lost all
Coneflowers, helenium, platycodon, herbs, annuals, monarda, oenothera, passiflora, dipladenia, rudbeckia, dianthus, lychnis, eupatorium, shasta daisy, antennaria, rose mallow, sidalcea, allium, ruellia, and the list goes on.

Annie, I tree-mailed you.. looking around my garden, I have a lot of lost-tag plants (sedums, hostas, etc) -- nice varieties, but I no longer know their names with any certainty. Are those still useful to you, or do your customers want names?

Annie- i am in the same boat as Jill/Critter- lots of excess stuff but no tags. Not sure if that works for your customers or not?
