gemini_sage said:Thanks for the info about Eliza Margie! I love Westerland, which is what lead to me order its sport Autumn Sunset. It grows more as a shrub here- all the canes were killed down to the ground this winter. I love the big, extra pretty leaves too.

More snow in the forecast for us tomorrow night too. I'm over it! Keep taking my little potted roses out to harden off and then having to bring them back in. I'd like to just get them in the ground already!

Dana, I have the shrub form of Cecile Brunner. It gets some winter damage from time to time (most winters its fine but it had some damage this winter), does yours?

Neal, I had mine under a pile of leaves. Its still little. So far the only one with extensive winter damage was Belinda's dream which is surprising. My mothers Belindas dream never did that. Im near louisville so we just got a bunch of snow. Im over it.

My Belinda's Dream was killed all the way down to the ground too, I was surprised by that. Usually up in your area roses don't suffer as much winter kill as down here, that makes the damage on your BD particularly surprising to me.

Beyond red roses, which are not hard to find except for the one you want:
Sterling Silver
Moon Shadow
Michelle Meilland

Two of these are the last ones I bought for Mom and killed through absolute stupidity so I want to replace them even though she is gone.
The ones of those three I have found are about as far from cheap as roses get.
Money it far tighter this year than I expected so by the time I know what I have enough bucks for the selling season may be over.
I got a Palantine catalog two weeks ago which did nothing for the situation especially considering I sent for it quite some time back.

Keep an eye open at Home Depot for Francis Meilland. I got one there last year along with Grimms Brothers or however you call it. Hilarious! I paid about $15 I think because I caught them at end of season but normally they will be $30 for a 2 gallon rose. The roses will be about 2 feet tall and a foot wide and blooming usually.

Your Home Depot garden department is a whole lot better than ours. It is rare for us to find anything beyond a few Knockouts.

@RpR I have an extra John Cabot I could send to you. I think it would be suitable for your zone.

Margie I greatly appreciate the offer, especially when I saw how much Heirloom roses want for one, but I am going to, for all practical purposes be sticking with five point hybrid tea roses.

I am doing this A: to show me, I still know how to raise roses like I did fifteen years ago Angry Sighing! ; B: because mom had a rose garden people walking by used to stop and say how beautiful it was and even when it was up to me, for years that still happened. Blinking

Now if one of the roses on the South side of the garage did go to the big rose garden in the sky, yours would be good replacement but as I am going to paint the garage this summer (which means the two healthiest bush roses there will be cut waaay down, I would probably end up killing it.)
But thank you very much for the offer. I tip my hat to you. Thumbs up

Well guys I went overboard. I have a sense of fear about it. A few things about my orders this year: We moved and I bought most things but not everything. I have more yard now, and Im trying to id a couple roses from my old house by buying the ones that closely match the description.
Here is my damage:
Benjamin Brittan
Christopher Marlowe
brass band (have been wanting this for YEARS since i saw califsue's pics)
pomponella fairy tale
salet
lady of the mist
lagerfeld
lavender lassie
morden blush
distant drums (i had ordered one that I'm waiting to confirm if it is dd bc the color was so crazy. so i got another from somewhere else just in case)
La france
variegata de bologna
koko loko
3 peach drifts for landscape
Now the ones I'm trying to id by buying are :

Hybrid Tea Rose (Rosa 'La France')
the other is:

I grew Lagerfeld in zone 6b New Jersey. I did love the shape, color, and fragrance of the flower. You may want to think about how to control thrips, because it is just about perfect as a trap plant for them. (By which we mean that thrips travel from miles around to knaw on its flower buds). I wish I had the perfect answer but thrips have just about kept my eight year old Baronne Prevost from ever bearing a perfect crop of flowers. Hopefully you will never have reason to worry about them.

I'm impressed that you chose Brass Band. This photo comes from a bed of them growing in a park in NJ. I was blown away when I saw it.

Good Luck with your new roses!

thanks! I will keep a look out. So far at this house we don't have thrips to bad. I wont go so far as to say I don't have them but its not a problem, so far, knock on wood. I haven't seen any but I haven't looked either. I don't use pesticides but I do have an abundance of lady bugs and mantis maybe that is why. At my old house though I brought in a plant once and didn't quarantine and had a terrible case. When I first started gardening around 2008 I saw Calif_sue pics of brass band and wanted it immediately. Ive missed bare root season with vendors that carry it like Regans, I think, and for a while no one had it but i saw it on roses unlimited list and so I finally got it after 10 years. I had given up on it for a while so I stopped looking. Maybe it has been available longer. I'm partial to the orange and apricot blends, and lavenders.

here is posidon with a mantis

My Brass Band is in decline, so I have another on order. I'm hoping my original has enough cane left that I can take an emergency backup cutting! It may have been a weak plant to start with, as it never got more than 18" tall.
Belinda's Dream always dies way back for me, no matter how well I protect it. Menards and Home Depot are carrying it this year in body bags so of course I bought a few as company for mine. By June, this one is always 3' tall or more, healthy as can be. Lovey dubby

Have any of you ever ordered Roses from Four Seasons Nursuries?

Some of their roses are no cheaper than the dedicated places but they have the collection bargains, which seems to be all I can afford or find right now.
That would put a big kabosh on my mostly red rose garden I preferred but as the song says , you don't always get what you waaant.

I'd stay away from that place. 275 negative reviews on Garden Watchdog and a one-star (out of five) rating on the Consumer Affairs website.

Cindi, I'm glad to see your post about Belinda's Dream- mine died back completely and I was concerned, so I'm glad to see this is not uncommon and that it makes a strong come back.

Yesterday I received the 2 roses I'd ordered from Jackson and Perkins, Livin' Easy and Easy Going. After ordering them initially I didn't get a confirmation and was already having some doubts about what to expect, so when I found those 2 varieties offered from another vendor I ordered them from that source too. I was very pleasantly surprised with the 2 quart plants from J&P! Very stout looking, healthy plants!
