I use them too! They're easy to wash out and use again. I have a stack of about 8 of them under my sink.
I place a small folded paper towel in the bottom to absorb liquids.
When I have time and several full I haul them all out to the compost bin or dig holes and empty them.

Great idea. I have lots of these in the garage. I use them for painting touch ups, holding fertilizers for specific plants, and now I have another use for them!

Great idea! I had a nice compost bin at my old house but gave it to a friend because I didn't have the space for it here. Now I need to ask friends and family to see who buys coffee in those big tubs ... hopefully someone will be willing to donate a few empties to me!

DH and I get Dunkin Decaf coffee in the bags it comes in at Kroger, so I'll have to find something else just as good.

Our local Council brought round two years ago, and issued every household with a massive green wheelie bin/garbage container for outside. The green ones are for bottles, plastic etc. A new large compost bin for anyone who wanted one and compost containers for the house. However they do not get used for what they were supposed for! A green wheelie bin (it has wheels and handles, a lid and is about 5 feet tall), was spotted in Egypt by Google Earth being pulled around a market!
As they were brand new and clean a lot of people use them to go on the ferry or the Eurostar to France as it is only 22 miles across or under the English Channel, stock them with cheap alcohol, cigarettes, chocolates and other tax free things and bring them back to the UK.
The compost bins which are metal have in some cases been converted to allow the burning of rubbish and the household compost containers are used for every conceivable use in the kitchen apart from putting compost in.

I have one of those plastic cat litter boxes under my kitchen sink, the smaller size, and I carry it out to the compost pile when it's full.

A house guest bought us a ceramic one that looked like a trashcan. Of course the lid broke so we empty every other day

Melvalina. I have about eight of them, too. They won't fit unde the sink, but I keep them in a large plastic bussing tray in the laundry room. The next stop when they are full is the compost. Bubbles -- there are a lot of them in DH's shop for just about everything, all nicely marked with a magic marker! I also have some for fertilizer. Jo Ann, we have been down that road, too.

I also use those cans to collect used coffee grounds for the compost or garden. I keep the grounds separate from real garbage-y garbage. Often too lazy to walk to my bins, I just fling the grounds into the yard somewhere.

I have one close to the coffee maker and dump grounds and liners in it and a couple I rotate for veggie trimmings. Easy to grab when headed outside and dump in the compost bins.

I have two cats and buy kitty litter in those plastic buckets. That's what I use to store my food scraps until I get around to emptying it in the compost pile.

I buy my coffee in bags, but went to Home Depot awhile back and bought a bunch of little red buckets from the paint section. I use them for the dog's water (2 big dogs drink a fair amount of water), and also for the kitchen scraps. No lids, so it motivates to dump them fairly regularly. One of these days I'm going to build my worm bins, and then I'll stop composting and start feeding worms instead.

My garbage company gives free curbside recycling, so I bought a 65gal wheely-bin at Lowes and that gets my recycling. I have maybe one 30gal (or smaller) bag of regular trash/week in my 95gal bin.

The one plastic coffee container I have, I use to store my coffee (what a novel idea!). I've used the same bin for about 4 years now. It holds 2 bags of coffee, with room for a little more. I make my own half-caf by mixing the coffee together in the container.

The only problem with using those plastic coffee cans is you have to pour out the coffee first. I guess it is okay for compost but I would not make coffee out of it. Nasty stuff. The best part of waking up is good coffee in your cup..... Yes I only use Italian or Turkish roast. One of my big life splurges.

That's why we have two coffee pots. DH likes his weak Folgers, and I prefer the stronger stuff, fresh ground. I only drink a couple of cups in the morning. But I do like the Folgers plastic cans we accumulate!
Mary, in Austin, you can have you garbage bill reduced if you recycle and step down to a smaller trash can. We have very little garbage, but on pick-up day, we sometimes have a neighbor dropping a few bags in our can!

My garbage bill is miniscule, compared to some folks. I pay them $51/quarter. And sometimes I fill up that big bin...just depends on whether I'm in a house-cleaning/purging mood.

Malvalena, thanks for the tip about the paper towel in the bottom. I too have tons of these containers and I use them for everything except compost because I had trouble with the lids leaking the decaying compost liquid. Thanks for the help! They will now be used for compost too!

I also use the large Folgers container. Hefty sells "Scrap Bags" that are perfect for lining them and the lid still fits. It is used again if not soiled, or tossed in the garbage. The container is not all smelly and easily rinsed out for the next batch.
