I took a crochet break but I'm back in full swing now (thank you Rainy Days) I sent in 2 more Octopus to get Certified. Crossing Fingers! I made something for myself while I wait. Introducing "Squatty". I hope people see Squatty, ask me about the Project and start creating an Octopus for a Preemie.

Did you ever yarn-bomb something? Smiling
My husband's computer chair started to look a bit ratty, so.....there is no shortage of yarn leftovers in my closet.

My grandmother used to be a tatter and could also do wonderful crochet and hand embroidery. AND hand quilting. She tried to teach me when I was a kid, I wasn't interested then...now she is long passed and her talent with her. Wish I had been more receptive. I myself do beadwork and mixed media art. I do a few tent shows a year, have one this weekend as a natter of fact. I weave beads and embroider them. There is a form of beadwork called bead crochet but I have never learned it. I want to though! This is an example of my work. Does anyone incorporate beads into their crochet?

Oh my goodness, this is absolutely awesome!!!

On occasion I have added some beads or pearls as embellishment to crochet as on this Mermaid. But that's it. I have repeatedly tried to crochet beaded spiral bracelets. I can do it with larger beads, but I have a hard time getting past the first few rows. It is very hard to see, where to insert the hook on a small scale.

Btw talking about teaching children to crochet and knit. I have gently pushed all Summer this year to teach my 11 year old twin grandchildren and one of the girls let me! She now can do a single crochet and we are doing a small super soft and fluffy circular mini rug to put in front of the bed. I am happy if she does a couple of rows every so often. I quickly add some more at my visits. I just want her to learn it, not get discouraged. She is on target!

Ursula that is fab!! Its fun to mix up the mediums. I make my own fabric sometimes by fusing silk fibers together or fusing them with other fabrics like metallic meshes, organzas and the like. I like to bead on it and have made vessels and boxes out of it. Just something fun to do. I have an art show this weekend, have to set up Friday at 5pm and will be selling Saturday and Sunday. I only do a few shows a year, my jewelry and 3D mixed media pieces are really labor intensive and I can't make enough to have show stock if I do more than 3 shows a year

I have some things planned that I want to do, I want to make realistic flowers that are bead embroidered. I have done realism before, I did a long tailed purple sylph once (a type of South American hummingbird) and made it into a large necklace. A lady bought it at a show in Sarasota a few years ago. I'd like to do some orchids, maybe heliconia.

Yes Cheryl that's the idea but in beadwork! This was a cloth doll I did that had silk crochet work from an old scarf as an over sew and was beaded. She is the Caipora, a Brazilian forest goddess who is the protector of animals. The birds nest at her feet holds an amethyst egg, symbolic of the endangered Hyacinth Macaw. I think I could do some simple crochet (REALLY SIMPLE) myself to use as a texture medium for beadwork. I have not ever thought about this before...it could be a new direction for me

I don't want to hijack your thread so I think I will start another, see if there are any other mixed media textile artists on the site! Crochet is definitely a textile art, as is knitting, but surprisingly many people (including art show judges) do not consider beadwork to be a textile art, even though it is the OLDEST textile art....beads were the first known bodily adornment besides tattooing utilized by humans. The earliest were made from whatever was at hand, wood, shell, stones that had natural holes....but I cannot generally enter a show under the Textile Art category. I can sometimes enter under Mixed Media, but most ofter I have to enter under Jewelry.

Starting a new project. The Peyton Heart Project is about making hearts to help prevent bullying and teen deaths. You can crochet hearts, knit them or wrap yard around cardboard. Great project for the kids, too! The crochet pattern took me about 10 mins (But I am a Beginner remember) and uses a small amount of yarn, about 5 yards. Good for yarn scraps! Then you place them where people can find to lift up their day. Read about it here.
