My favorite is probably profusion zinnias, too. I always grow at least a few of them from seed every year.

Allison, I've got some of these on my deck that I never got around to planting, and they're in a lot of shade... maybe just get morning sun. I think these ornamentals might work in less sun than the ones trying to produce nice big ripe fruit!

I tried a bunch of ornamental ones last year.. no good.. had them in a big container on my deck where it's nice and hot too.. not sure if the care I gave them inside was not good enough or the light outside is not good enough

My favorite annuals from seeds so far are:
Lobelia
Portulaca
Thunbergia
Nasturtium
Cosmos
Crepis--I have rubra which is short and the flowers are like a pink dandelion.

I have a lot of petunia seed but haven't really tried them from seed yet. Really beautiful photos everyone!

Nice selection, dmac. I grow portulaca every year...it was one my uncle's favorite flower, so I always have some.

I must be the one person that cannot get cosmos to grow. I love them, but I'm not sure why they don't do well for me. I've tried starting them indoors, direct sowing and have even bought plants. They fail to thrive, and they never come back. My neighbor next door always has hers reseed like crazy.

So many annuals to love -- doesn't anyone else like the humble marigold?? Scratch up the ground, sprinkle some seed, add water.... ditto to cosmos, which also self-seeds even here in the north pretty reliably. But for the flower boxes that I hang off the deck railing, on the S side of the house, I still like petunias, and this year I think I discovered the secret to keeping them looking good throughout the season. Of course I've always attempted to keep them deadheaded, etc., but this year, though a combination of circumstances, I planted about twice as many plants in each box as normal, some were quite immature when first planted and the others were already flowering; then, on top of deadheading, I was able to trim down the plants as they started getting lanky, and it was never even noticeable that I had removed some flowers. At any rate, I'd hate to have to just pick one to grow, because impatiens for the shady areas are also a must in my garden!! And sunflowers... morning glories... Shrug!

I never manage to get photos of most of my containers:lol: I get my TB iris just fine but then stuff starts blooming and I'm watering my fanny off (only figuratively not literally-unfortunately!)

This is a photo of Crepis--yup, I spelled it wrong--I really want the white variety but I've not seen any place in the US who has it.

http://davesgarden.com/guides/... and mine were the darker pink, not too pale or washed out---like the first photo from this google image search.

http://www.google.com/search?q...

Love Linaria too--I have a small garden at my apt and take up a lot of space for my iris addiction so I lean towards small annuals that I can squeeze in almost anywhere.

Could some one direct me to a seed swap? I grow most perennials but love annuals for that early punch of color. I purchased a mini GH and would like to try a few annuals this yr. Also what is the best wave type petunia for southern heat. My waves always get so lanky Sad in baskets

I don't know of any current ones. If you don't find one in replies here, you might try asking on the trade forum

or on Cubits...
or organize one yourself...
