Edible? What area do they cover and why would one be in a garage? Thanks Brian, I'll have to go read up on them.

We find them in the sewage and drain pipes. Just pick a spot; pull up a manhole cover, and drop your line. Green Grin!

I think ours just dig tunnels into the yard from the lake. I'm not sure to what purpose. Maybe to bear young where they'll stay wet, but the fish can't get them??

There are hundreds of species of crayfish in North America, some species barely reach an inch in length but a few species can approach 1 foot in length. Most are aquatic, but some are terrestrial like the ones described by chelle. Those dig tunnels on land down to the water table. They spend most of their time resting in the tunnels, but come out at night, or on damp days, to feed.

It's actually a pretty good sign if you see them around. Much like frogs, most are pretty sensitive to pollution and environmental degradation so their presence indicates at least a certain degree of environmental quality. Most species are pretty small, two or three inches long.

Well thank you! I tip my hat to you. Hopefully I will have some nice Irises next year. And pictures, I ordered two kinds of Iris. First I have 50 reticulata 'Harmony' from Brent and Becky's Bulbs. Then second I ordered 4 from Stout Gardens, Alliteration, Be my Baby, Born to shine, and Exotic Aire. I think they are bearded Irises. Prettier than the Purple ones my mother had, because they are NOT purple. My mother had about a thousand of those purple ones, and that is why I never want to see another purple iris as long as I live Green Grin!

Susan....Be My Baby is a pink Border Bearded which I grow and like. Exotic Aire is a Standard Dwarf Bearded that I also grow and like. There are pictures of both on the data base.
