My calendulas over-wintered from last year. Now, in the heat of summer they are not looking very well. Well, those were the ones that were already a full year old anyway, but I do see some seedlings coming up. I will wait until it gets cooler to thin them.

My calendulas in Utah have survived the winter, even with LOTS of snow! I'm positive that they weren't seedlings, since I had tied a string around one just to see if they were actually surviving. Mine have also done really well with high heat. At 110, they looked as good as ever. Maybe it's because it's so dry there? I wasn't crazy about them at first because they reseed bad, but I had a new appreciation for them once I saw them survive winter, and summer!

Mine survived the Winter. I thought they were annuals too, but even when the temperature was in the teens, it didn't bother them. Mine have been blooming all Winter.

My only issue has been the hundreds of little seedlings sprouting. I definitely don't want them to take over my flowerbed but I hate pulling up seedlings Sad

Thanks Cinda Smiling I'm trying to be diligent with deadheading. I was really surprised they survived the heat and drought last Summer, though they looked horrible.

My house in Utah is in zone 5a, and they did survive over winter. That's not to say that this is normal. My neighbors family owns a huge nursery, and he said he had never seen them overwinter anywhere other than in my yard. But, they did, and I had the same ones for several years. The seedlings are bad, but I do not feel guilty about pulling them. If they aren't where I want them, they are gone. Mine weren't able to bloom in winter because they were under lots of snow, but as soon as the snow melted, they were green!

That's really amazing Natalie. I guess I could dig up the seedlings and plant them in other places in my garden. Thumbs up

Cameron, I've tried that, and wasn't very successful, but it's still worth trying! Just make sure that you get some dirt with the roots. Better yet, dead head the flowers, and you won't have as many seedlings. Or, save the seeds and plant elsewhere. It's really hard to not let any seeds drop, but the seeds are large and easy to pick up. You can also use some Preen in the area, which will stop the seeds from growing. I just yank the little babies up! It's easy to do, and I don't feel bad about it for even a second!

Thanks for telling me that Natalie. I guess I shouldn't feel bad because they are taking over my bed, and for the well being of my other plants I really need to. Hilarious!

Thumbs up It's really not all that bad once you consider that they WILL take over eventually! A seedling that you don't want is just a weed, so yank them out! Your other plants will thank you for it!

You're right, I'm surprised they are thriving. I haven't amended the soil with anything.

I am convinced that they will grow anywhere, since they do at my house. I have a small crack in the cement stairs leading up to the porch, and I have to pull them out of that crack several times a year. There can't even be much dirt at all in there because the crack is so small! I'm surprised that the seeds are able to get in there, but they do. I've also had them come up in the middle of the street, and it's paved! Any little crack with a tiny bit of dirt seems to be enough for them. It's a good thing that they are pretty, because I'd be screaming at them if they weren't!

They are just stubborn at my house, and they do grow in shade for me. I have some on the North side of my house that get zero direct sun, and they are growing there. They just don't bloom as well as the ones that get sun. I have very few in full sun all day, and they do very well for me with no more than 6 hours of sun. When I get back home I'll see if I can find the pictures from last year. They didn't look ready to bloom when I left a week ago.
