How is this for a weird one! Late last summer 'Baby Star' looked like it was getting ready to flower. It ended up getting buried by leaves and I hadn't seen it again until this week. It turned into a tree! There are two more in the same pot that also looked like they would flower, but they turned into "bushes". Hilarious! There are a few other ones that are normal though. I think they look pretty cool. Will be interesting to see what happens to them this summer.

Love it. From time to time I see mine develop on top of a root and the dirt gets washed away from the thick root, but have never seen this.

It does make it look like a bizarre desert scene or something.

Too bad there isn't some way to get them to grow like that on purpose - and never flower!

Take a 1+ y/o well grown rosette with a thick root. Remove any stolons on it, but hopefully it hasn't produced offsets. Dig it up and removed any dead leaves and plant only the bottom inch of the stem, so the rosette is sticking up in the ground. Let grow a couple of weeks to establish, then cut the top of the rosette off and remove any remaining leaves, carefully pulling them off. You will be left with the " stump trunk" of the tree and the top of the trunk should sprout multiple new rosettes.

You will need to select the rosette carefully from those varieties that tend to have thick roots, smaller rosettes, and that tend to hold the rosettes closer to the stem and don't produce long stolons. Should work, but will likely need some experimentation to find the right variety and correct timing. This kind of surgery will likely put the plant back a bit, so it might last a couple of years. It might be necessary to cut the top of the "tree" off each year. It might also be necessary to remove the medium from around the root during the first or second year, before the surgery, to encourage upward growth of stem and root.

Let's id some possible candidates by noting 1) thick roots and stems, 2) short stolons and 3) smaller rosettes as we work with our plants.

I'm sure we could also do some grafting among/between semps, but not sure why one would want to.

BTW, I might have asked before, but anyone see a Fame Monstrose bloom - how long do these live if they don't bloom?

That's a good question twit. I don't know that we have had anyone post about their Fame Monstrose blooming. Confused

Well, if it ever does bloom, even if its a "normal" hen, I think it would be important to collect and plant the seed. Might see some very interesting offspring, especially if pollen from a non-Fame parent.

The Baby Star "tree" is starting to tip over from being top heavy. I have it propped up with a stone. The hens are starting to have chicks on it too. Sure is a strange little plant!
