I came across this 6-pack of "pre-popped" lilies at Home Depot the other day. I popped them into this basket for display in front of the house. Come fall they will get popped into the ground. They are supposed to be dwarf in height.

It was only this spring that I learned how HUGE the bulbs get! I had planted three different ones all in a row - and suddenly I had at least 24 greeneries popping up, SO I know the one on the right and the one on the left were what they were, BUT not all the population in between, I had to dig to find out what was attached to what.....

I still have some from the midddle section that broke off and I won't know until they bloom...

THEN I'll plant them in separate groups so I can tell WTF I'm doing when I go to divide them.

Whew!

Jo Ann, I expect they are something in the Lily Looks line of breeding, maybe Tiny Hope. That is, if they actually turn out to look like the photo on the label.

Crittergarden, do you know the names of your lilies? Any foliage that had the top broken off won't bloom this year.

Here is an image of my Lilium pumilum on May 3 posted in the thread "Lilies of May":

Thumb of 2012-05-07/Ispahan/799f14

And now, here they are today May 7:

These are so small and delicate that it is really, really hard to get an effective photo that is not out of focus.

Freakishly early lilies must be an Illinois thing this year? Confused

FYI I saw many Red Lily Beetles today.More than I saw all season '11. I think the warm March made an early hatch.I sprayed with Bayer but must have missed some of the later lilies that emerged in mid April.
I just sprayed with Sevin.
