Does anyone have the Lady Banks yellow rose in their garden? I am wanting to cover this structure

Thumb of 2012-04-02/mollymistsmith/5425b5

I originally planted Mexican Flame Vines but they died so now I am thinking roses. This was supposed to be a greenhouse my SIL was building me. The picture is 2 years old and it looks the same now. I am pretty sure it will never be turned into a greenhouse so I am wanting something to grow up and over. It is 12'w x 20'L x 10'H. If you think the LB rose will work, how many would you plant?

Thanks in advance. Smiling

I have Lady Banks pink as I can't find a Yellow. She's a wonderful rambler as mine, I got 2 years ago & it's now like 8' tall. But I didn't get ANY blooms last year. I would also look at Therese Bugnet as she's VERY dependable, no fuss, but again only in pink. Sad But if I had that structure (and I'm building one very very similar myself this spring) I'd plant honeysuckle. Blooms all season, SMELLS wonderful, no thorns, evergreen, hummingbird magnet.. love honeysuckle!

Thanks Toni. I didn't know it came in pink. Honeysuckles grow wild here and are invasive. That and blackberries we have everywhere on the 10 acres. I would really like something evergreen that blooms all the time. Lol. I don't ask for much. Hilarious!

Cl. Cecile Brunner is a nice pink climber, although I believe it only blooms once a year like the Lady Banks rose. I used to grow both the Cecile Brunner and Lady Banks (R. Banksia lutea -- the yellow one). Both were beautiful, but I think the Lady Banks was more tender and the Cecile Brunner ended up being a better choice for me. My sister had the yellow one and it was spectacular in her yard. And the white Banksia climber is supposed to be very fragrant, whereas the yellow one has no fragrance. But again, they're all once-a-year bloomers.

Theresa Bugnet blooms all season for me. I have a couple of other climbers that are all-season bloomers, can't remember the names right now. However, one of them produces the TEENIEST blooms. They're in the "mauve" family, but the blooms are literally the size of a nickle! Talk about microscopic! The other one I also cannot remember the name on, but holy guacamole does that one have the THORNS on it! YIKES! I may have to move both of these as they're very very blood-thirsty and I have them in a not-too-wise spot (I walk by there every time I have to turn on the water). I have two other climbers, Purple Splash & Harlequin, but I don't think that they would be able to climb that high onto a building frame like what you have.

How about clematis? Or Trumpet Vine (Campsis radicans). Another idea is to mix vines. Wisteria mixed in with Autumn Sweet clematis with virginia creeper and honeysuckle. That way you have something blooming all the time all growing season & the honeysuckle stays evergreen. Even grapes would be awesome, personally.

Decisions decisions!

You could use the climber Autumn Sunset, or its parent Westerland. They bloom continuously here in Kansas, but they have mean thorns.
But where you are, they would have that structure covered in no time!
Actually the orange of Autumn Sunset would be real pretty with purple Jackmanii growing through it.
Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get.

I saw Lady Banks recently in Tucson, AZ. It was absolutely huge and totally covered a large structure. It was also in full bloom with small yellow flowers and fantastic. Unfortunately I can't remember if it was just one plant, but it might have been. I noticed that it virtually thornless.

I've seen the pictures/video on that rose in Tucson. Absolutely gorgeous! Too bad she's a one-trick pony

If you want a huge climbing rose that reblooms you might consider Mermaid. It likes warm weather but your climate isn't too different from mine and Mermaid certainly thrives here. Mine grows a lot faster than my Lady Banks.

I have two huge Lady Banks Yellow roses, Tami. I used to have three, but I took the third one out because it kept knocking over the arbors supporting it, even though there were four of those arbors. The remaining two are held up mostly by a long grape arbor and a garage in the first case and by trees, a fence and a gazebo in the second. The photos in our database are pictures of my banksias.

Lady Banks Yellow (Rosa banksiae 'Lutea')

One Lady Banks Yellow would cover your structure within a few years, but it probably would also need more support than that.

It's like it's eating that house. Doesn't Mermaid do that too?

That's a detached garage. My house is in no danger, Toni. Smiling

Mermaid has wicked thorns. Lady Banks is thornless.

I gotta figure out what my two little climbers are that are evil as far as thorns. And I mean evil. One has the little teeny prickles and the big "cat's claws" thorns, the other one is just chock full of the teeny prickles. The one that's chock full of teensy prickles is the one that has the microscopic flowers. I got them both from RU 2 years ago.

UPDATE: I found my invoice (email) from RU when I ordered them. The one w/teensy evil prickles is Rose Marie Viaud (http://www.helpmefind.com/rose...) and the other one is Charles de Mills (http://www.helpmefind.com/gard...), but Charles de Mills is supposedly thornless according to HMF and this rose is EVILLY thorned. Not as bloodthirsty as George Burns, but pretty nasty!

But on that note, a mystery rose that I didn't label I was able to figure out! Yay! My mystery rose has got to be Cardinal de Richelieu (http://www.helpmefind.com/rose...). Yay!!

I can check my Charles de Mills, but I'm fairly certain it has thorns. It does have a gorgeous deep rich colored flower that looks sliced off.
Cardinal de Richelieu is very very very very purple. The most purple rose I've ever seen. I have a deep dark purplish red rose that somebody thought was Cardinal de Richelieu and sent me a cutting. It turned out to be Orphaline de Julliet.
Belle de Crecy has also been mistaken for Cardinel de Richelieu.

I have all of these if you want to compare during bloom time. That is, if we have a normal bloom during this very very strange year.

Tabby - isn't that the truth! I thought that my mystery rose was actually a mismarked Ebb Tide due to the coloring & fragrance, but it only bloomed 2 blossoms last year and that was it. Now that I know what it is, I'll keep a watch on it & see when/if it blooms. Here's a pic from last July (Zuzu may recognize this picture)

That doesn't look like Cardinal de Richelieu to me, Toni. It shouldn't have those white flecks.

I've found that the best way to distinguish Cardinal from Belle de Crecy is by the petal reverse. On Cardinal de Richelieu it's gray or beige (greige?). On Belle it's a lighter violet-purple.

Well, that's the closest I'm going to get because it's where I planted "Cardinal" from RU. I remember planting it close to the sidewalk so I would have someone gorgeous to look at as I walked by, plus I wanted it close to a Perfume Tiger on one side & Golden Masterpiece on the other (figured that white/pink on one side & the yellow on the other would look very nice).

Besides, a rose by any other name...LOLLL Green Grin! Green Grin! Green Grin!
