I checked to see if there was an Orchid database this morning. There wasn't in the drop down, so I typed Orchid in the search box, and got orchids. Until I got to page 3, then it turned into a catch all...everything from Daylilies to roses. Is there no mod. for the Database?

I don't think anyone has really stepped up to take on the role of orchid moderator in our database. I don't know much about them myself, so they are there and people post photos of them, but we don't have a centralized location for them like we do with many of the other kinds of plants.

I think it's just that orchids span across so many genera, and they are unusually classified (with grex names).

Orchids are the second largest genus in the world. There's a whole bunch of them. Green Grin!
I garden for the pollinators.

It seems a shame that people's other photos will remain lost in the orchids database. Boojum left the orchid data base on Cubits, so if one wants to look or propose from the Orchids forum, there is a link, but I don't know how close she is monitoring it.

Everything on the first couple of pages starts with "orchid" and is followed by the rest of the info. Not very professional, but at least they ARE orchids. I found a couple of pages of daylilies, as well as several misc. plants before I gave up. Thumbs down

The database is only as complete as we all make it. The strongest areas of our database are those areas that someone stepped up and took charge of it, and oftentimes brought a DB with them from Cubits.

One day I'm sure we'll get there with orchids (and crepe myrtles, and peach trees, and mangoes, and .. and ... Smiling )

When you typed 'orchids' it gave you everything that had it as a common or cultivar name, often it becomes a color name, that's why you will find daylilies, roses, etc. You have to actually search by the genus type (Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Epidendrum etc.) to get it to be all orchids. You can perhaps pick one genus at a time and see what comes up.
I wouldn't want that job either, those names are all crazy sounding to me!! Blinking I need simple.
