Thursday evening I went to close the draperies and there was a deer very close to the house, when she disappeared from sight I grabbed the camera and I ran down stairs where DH was watching TV, told him to look at the deer close to the house, then there she was looking in at us through the mini blind. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing After she had a good look at us, the lights were on, she just went about her business looking for stuff to munch on. Blinking Hilarious!

How funny. She sure is a brave one and very curious. I am sure you wish she would stay out of your garden.

She looked very much at ease, I'm wondering if people are feeding her and she was looking for a handout. Big Grin

I am sure she is very pretty but you must not want your garden plants eaten as deer food. Blinking

I don't plant anything out the front that the deer want to eat, there are just too many of them here. Glare

That's beautiful, Margaret.
I almost missed this thread.

Sometimes something very magical happens and we simply connect with a wild animal.
As long as we keep our distance and respect the fact that they are wild and will remain so, I think it's OK. It's also OK because there's nothing there she'll try to eat.

In some areas, they are almost tame. Where I live, they don't want to come into the yard. Even if the gate is open, they are too afraid of humans. I know they are occasionally hunted somewhere in the area...even though that's not supposed to happen inside the subdivision.

Some deer from elsewhere have moved into the area lately. People have been noticing...what with deer wandering around even during the daytime lately. So I started putting deer feed out again. Don't know why they came, but it's been a month and a half without rain. I always put out water for wildlife, along with bird and hummingbird feeders. Now I'm going back to putting out some deer feed like I did last year during the drought.

Just something people have to do in places that get dry spells and droughts. Got a few drops of rain today...maybe some real rain over the weekend!

We had some drizzle last night and this morning. Still waiting for the BIG rain, good chance, but hoping is all I can do. I got to thinking yesterday about the deer around here. Most died off during the droughts we've had. Yesterday, I was talking to a guy at the feed store. He said the springs fawn season didn't happen to speak of. And that this summer some does have produced fawns very late...in summer. I've only seen one fawn so far this year. So I realized that the deer I'm seeing lately are unusually small and thin. I imagine that that affects their reproductive abilities and therefore any pregnancy is problematic. They could miscarry more and might be too small to give birth without problems. I've heard this about young undernourished girls in poor parts of the world and the difficulties that result when they are married off too young. Something similar could be happening here. Of course, on some ranches, they put out food and water for deer during parts of the year...so they can have income from deer leases or hunters. But even so, that's not going to be the same as having sufficient natural food and water year round. I just feel sorry for the deer.
