Okay, me again. Thank you for all your answers so far. About how thick is the moss?

Probably about 2" thick. We've had temps near or in the 90's with 20-30 MPH winds for 4 days now. That's pretty hard on the ol' semp ball - I may end up having to replace a few plants.

Thanks! We have high temps and winds for a long time here so.....maybe it's not a good idea to make one.....at least during the summer months. Maybe I'll wait until spring.

I have mine in full sun and it's not in a very protected area, so that makes a difference too.

Okie dokie. Me again *Blush* When you 'pin' the semp to the ball do you stick a leg of the pin through the plant? Like pierce it? Confused Sorry, I'm trying to get this right and don't want to kill my plants though they seem fairly hardy (see Twit's thread on doing division surgery on em!!) Blinking
I know some of the offsets have the stolon attached, but some don't and are just the plant with no 'umbilical cord'.
P.S. How's your ball doing?
Hugs, Mich and Crew!

I'll let Chris field this one. Or some of the others that have performed this procedure.

I put the pin in so that it the flat part of the 'U' shape is over a few leaves (as close to where they're attached to the plant as possible), then into the moss. I don't actually pierce the plant at all. You'll find that the first time the sphagnum moss dries out it sort of shrinks away from some of the pins and you may have to push them in a bit.

My ball is doing well. The squirrels have ripped some of the plants off and I'm waiting a bit to replace them because of the horrible heat and humidity we're having right now.

Know what your mean. It is almost too hot to consider planting anything new.

It is probably wise to wait until at least maybe until it cools off some, Fall may be a good plan. I hope you will all come back here and share your creations.
