No idea on that one , Ken. If it blooms again like that , I would show it the door.
This is a fairly new plant, blooming for the fist time. Bc. Clear Stars

I assume you mean that these flowers are indeed defective, Lindsey? So, in your opinion, having the petals "fused" to the lip/column doesn't occur in nature? Isn't the lip/column only a specialized petal? I am simply trying to find out what I have here and don't mean to question anyone's expertise in this matter.

It's a nice flower anyway, Ken. I'd give it a few more bloom cycles to see if it comes around. But then I'm not concerned with names, or flower forms. If it's pretty, blooms nicely and I like it, I keep it.

Bl. Star Ruby 'Xanadu' has a couple of nice new flowers today.

I loved my Bc. Star Ruby 'Xanadu' AM/AOS plants. They always bloomed in the fall and sometimes again in the late spring. They were good growers, giving me predictable dividable plants almost every year. I don't know whether I brought a single one with me though. I should be seeing buds or flowers if there's one hidden up under the trees, but I see nothing. Sad

This one has blasted a couple of flower spikes from the heat (I think) Ken. Now that it's just a bit cooler it's much happier.

Ken, I've had a few plants that have bloomed 'odd flowers '. I see a few odd flowers on first time seedlings, but they go on to have more accepted looking blooms on the second or third blooming. Without a name, it's hard to say what's 'normal ' for your plant. If I were trying to sell it , I think it would be a challenge. But that's just my humble opinion.
Elaine, don't you just love that Xanadu? The color is outrageous!

I haven't sold a single plant in almost 6 months. Those days are pretty much gone, at least when it comes to orchids, Lindsey. I wouldn't sell an orchid that is not labeled, regardless.

Oh Ken. I am sorry. I figured that with your move and projects that you might not be selling plants. My bad, I should have asked before now.

Not a problem, Bill. I will likely keep the domain name, 'Tropical Plants & More', but that tiny business got out of hand last year and worked me to death. I have such severe back issues now (I fear I have ruptured yet another disc, my third one, L-3). I can no longer walk or stand without significant back and leg pain. Getting old sometimes sucks. Whistling I am scheduled to see a neurosurgeon next week.

Congrats to my Florida fans on their win against #5 LSU. Congrats to me and the Dawg fans for the win over #8 Auburn.

Thanks, Elaine. The flowers are nice and the plant is healthy. That's the two most important things to me. I still wonder (and hopefully Bill will answer this question) whether any varieties, whether species or hybrids, present with only their sepals spread. Just because my flowers are "unusual", does that make them defective? I guess, since the flowers only opened about 36 hr. ago, those petals could still unfurl. The flowers are heavy and waxy and thus should last well. She's hanging adjacent to my driveway, so I can easily check on her several times each day. Time will tell.
