I'm having quite a few pretty seedlings bloom....pretty but not exceptional. It makes me appreciate the talented hybridizers who grow 100's of crosses, 1000's of seedlings, and then choose a few to evaluate and then throw 1000's away. I'll only have room to keep a few.
sibs out of 'That's All Folks X Guardian Angel'
You are a patient person if you looked at all of these........thanks
Just based on the flowers, numbers 6 (the peachy one with the deep texture veins), 21 (yellow standards and purple falls), and 22 (second from last) look like winners.
Based on colors #1, 18 and 21 are my picks. I had the same problem when I was hybridizing daylilies. Finally stopped because I didn't really have the room to grow as many as it took to get somethig really outstanding. Lots of fun though and looks like you're getting many nice ones.

IMHO
Keep 1;4;14;16;17;20 if all has good good bud count branching and form.
The hardest thing for me over the years have been when to keep one for using on crosses but not to intro...I have three right now, that the color is either purple, or yellow but the branching is so great using it on other iris.
Good luck and keep posting.

Some real beauties there, Paul. I would not be able to let them go. If this is their first year I would keep them another year before even making a decision. I found that my seedlings looked better the second year. Of course that made it harder to say goodbye.

I'm trying to look at them objectively and say to myself...."if I had ordered this and given good money for it would I be pleased when it bloomed/". Objectively is the key word.
That is why it is really difficult to judge seedlings from a picture posted. Because more than just the flower picture goes into deciding keepers. You could show us the prettiest flower that had only 3 buds or maybe weak stalks. So much one can't tell from a flower picture.

So true Rita...the late Melba Hamblen who was a well known and respected Utah Hybridizer used to say that if she got a true red iris with one bud she would introduce it. I like branching and buds.....more buds mean a lomger bloom season. I also like them to be wide, ruffled, good substance and an intriguing color. I'm going to take a few more pictures of newly opened ones this evening when the light is more subdued and will number them and give the breeding.. My best pinks so far have been Guardian Angel X Glamor Pants.....a different shade of pink.
All I can say is STUNNING!!! Love the pinks the most, but I love the rest almost as much! I've spent a small fortune buying pink iris, and only have about 5! The rest were anything but pink when they bloomed and I've got oodles of them. So, I'm jealous of your beautiful blooms! I've got to try hybridizing one of these days!
I got an e-mail from Keith Keppel yesterday, and he said he was really dissapointed with his SDB seedlings, His TB's haven't opened yet, they're having a later spring there I guess. So Paul, you can be glad you have some you have to ponder over.
Politicians are like diapers, they need to be changed often, and for the same reason.
I really like your seedlings. I started writing down the number of the ones I like, but I wrote most all the numbers down! My best advice is to test them in other locations to kind of "adopt them out" for a bit if you don't have room for them. Might I suggest a Missouri location? (Sorry, couldn't help myself!)
Really great seedlings! I enjoyed browsing through them.
Always remember , Paul, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I would never have introduced 'Thornbird' in a million years and it went on to win the Dykes medal. Go figure.
