I wait for this every year...Holmskioldia sanguinea, Chinese Hat Plant. Love those little cuts and saucers. This is the usual orange one...wish I had the bright red one too!

Holmskioldias are so cute! Lovey dubby
I don't have one because they bloom too late in the year and would get frozen before blooming. I do have a Karomia tettensis (which was removed from the Holmskioldia genus somewhat recently). It is summer-blooming with an obligate winter dormancy. Not only is it pretty, but the flowers are fragrant, the hummingbirds love it, it is easy to overwinter in the garage, and it is just a tough plant overall. I absolutely adore it. Lovey dubby

I have (had) the Chinese Hat (Holmskioldia sanguinea) with red blooms but left it at our house in Sebastian. I'll have to look around the next time I go down there to see if it's still living.

Christine, no I don't think it does...but I have never stuck my nose up there LOL I will have to check and see. This plant is pretty tough, I used to have it growing outside for several years. If it froze in winter it came back from the roots. I finally removed it to the greenhouse permanently because I wanted it to get big unmolested by cold. Now I have to say its kind of out of control! It isn't actually a vining plant but it does grow a lot of thin branches that tend to almost have a vining habit. I have it growing against the wall with a Bauhinia glabra which also has this vining like habit so they kind of compliment each other. Both have gone up the wall 12 feet, draped and hang down an additional 4-5 feet. I used to have an Artobotrys hexapetalus there as well but it died out. I have not decided if I want to try and find a replacement yet for it.

Mine is still in a container; I never got around to putting it in the ground but if it's still alive when we get moved back to Sebastian, I think it should survive winters there so I might see if I can find a spot to plant it. Mine tended to be a leggy, sprawling shrub. If it's still around, I'll try to take cuttings next spring and see if I can get them to take root.
