I had no idea ... I am so challenged when it comes to technical stuff. I get messages popping up on my Macbook every so often saying something about new updates available. I've had this laptop for quite awhile now and I think the updates are from Apple but I don't pay much attention, I just click "Later" ... I haven't accepted any updates yet. 
I use Firefox all the time and I think I remember my husband updating me to a newer version recently ... maybe it's not automatic on a Mac?
