Still think these are the immature leaves of a Mulberry. If the plant dies back to the ground or is cut back to the ground the mature leaf shape may never be seen.

On the other hand it should be easy enough to identify it as a Pentapetes phoenicea IF the plant produces the correct flowers and the correct seed pods; should have the answer in one growing season.
