We had forsythia here too and ended up digging and pulling them out with cable and jeep.
These were is daughters garden but the whole place opened up for taller plants ,like lilies.

I was thinking the same thing as I read about your muted iris. I value muted colors for the same reason, they arent stand-outs but serve a purpose.
