I collect Hibiscus, hardy, tropicals and cousins like Pavonia. I overwinter them in my greenhouse and cut back in the fall and root cuttings for 'insurance'. Every 3 - 4 years I do drastic cut backs and drastic root prunes on the tropicals to keep them manageable pot size wise since they have to be over wintered. My crosses are deliberate and thought out, taking coloring and patterning into consideration. I also cross Morning Glory as well which taught me that F1 offspring are usually a good mixture/blend of both parents .. it's the F2 and F3 that really start to get interesting.
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
