Evan, I've overwintered E.autumnalis in the ground before. I had neglected to dig my tender bulbs that fall, and was shocked the next spring to see them return. If I recall correctly, I left them in the ground the next fall and lost them that time, but hadn't mulched or provided any protection for them.
