I am spitting mad this afternoon. Of course our county easements are mowed by the county and we pay for that in our county taxes. Our county, years ago, seeded roadsides with wildflowers such as phlox, coreopsis, liatris, showy evening primrose & a few more. It looks so beautiful when they are blooming!!!! The county also has a policy, which is listed on the county website which states:
Contractors are prohibited from mowing wildflowers during their blooming season.
The county outsources the mowing to contractors.
When we bought this place in 2013, the easement mowing was done 4 times per year as it was supposed to be and the contractor did a perfect job of not mowing the areas of wildflowers while they were blooming. The same was true of 2014. Last year however, our easements never got mowed at all. I had to call the public works department and report the contractor was not doing their job. The county sent a highway mower out here to mow as things had gotten so out of control by that time that it required heavier equipment to mow it.
Yesterday as I was sowing more wildflower seed, I was marveling over how beautiful it looked out there with a 60 foot long, 15 foot wide swath of thickly blooming phlox in beautiful, bright colors. I was so excited! I swear it made me smile for the rest of the day and this morning too.
The mowers came just before lunch. After lunch I went down to put a letter in the mailbox. My heart sank. They mowed everything - EVERYTHING! There is not a bloom left to be seen!
What I can't understand is WHO sits on a mower & says to themselves, "I see these gorgeous flowers blooming in a glorious carpet of color but I don't care. I'm going to mow them all down and destroy them."? I called public works again.
I am a strong believer in the simple fact is that what matters in this life is how we treat others. I think that's what living is all about. Not what I've done in my life but how I've treated others. ~~ Sharon Brown
