Steve, I am at a loss. I don't think that I have ever had a plant or a cutting that was soft but not rotting. As far as I know, all my viable plants and cuttings are really hard to the touch. Of course, I don't poke around on all my plants either. Hopefully someone else with more experience than I can help you with this question.
