To insert a smilie place curser where you want to insert. Drag curser to highlight all information typed after that point. Hold down your 'Ctrl' button and hit 'c' at the same time. Then delete everything you just hightlighted. Put curser at position you want to insert smilie. Click your smilie. Then hold down your 'Ctrl' button and at same time hit 'v'. I agree with you, it's a pain and it would be great to insert a smilie. I would luv to insert the 'I agree' smilie right now but I don't know how to do all of that on my new tablet yet.
