Even though I had Salvia microphylla 'San Carlos Festival' arrive in April from FBTS, I noticed last night while breaking off the "dead" brown stems of (last years) salvias in containers, I was happily surprised to see new green leafy growth on last years 'San Carlos Festival'! Sometimes SCF survives our winters in containers and I'm very happy. I'm going to plant the new SCF in the same container and have more to love this year.
Then, I moved to the container that had Salvia leucantha 'Midnight' last year. To my amazement, I started to realize that I had green inside the brown branches I was breaking off. I was almost done when I realized it, but it is ok. I got another one from FBTS this year. I wouldn't think that 'Midnight' in a container in zone 6a would have green in the spring.
I have a lot of containers and don't do anything with them until the following spring(s).
When the weather warms up and is dry, I'll have to see what else has new leaves in other containers I've around our yard.
